travel w/in VN

Is it pretty easy & a safe bet to book travel (flights/trains/buses) between VN cities once we're there the day before or day of, or should these be booked in advance???

OpenTour buses (of which AN PHU and SINH are the safest and Camel, Hanh and T.M. Brothers the worst) can generally be booked same day.

Rail to Lao Cai (from Ha Noi) and Reunification Express services require a 2/3 day lead time.

Flights are generally same day although seats can be tight on the HCMC <<>> Ha Noi run because of all the government stiffs that are flying these days.

Flights to/from Dien Bien Phu, in particular, are subject to weather.

Telephone ticketing is available on the rail tickets and e-ticketing is available on both Pacific and VietNam Airlines.

Hi Darlek,

Is it true that we now can buy air tickets of either Vietnam Airlines or Pacific Airlines without coming to their offices? Do we print out the e-tix and show the airport staff and board?

Does it mean we pay online when we book?

Does it mean we can book from our home as early as we want?

Thanks,

Andy

we pre booked from australia, but did not pay until we arrived........we spoke to many other families that had trouble getting 5 seats etc, and had to change plans, probably ok to wait if theres only 1 or2 of you, and if you can be flexible, but we knew where and when we wanted , so felt safer to book before

mcnrx, just a word of warning:

Apparently for airline flights: You have to buy a plane ticket so you can get the phone number, to phone the Airline, to find out their nearest Genuine office, to then go and buy the ticket for the flight you actually really want to fly on. Not sure how you get that first ticket.............. But other than that, it's easy as..........

I read all of that on another thread somewhere, if only I had time to scan all the threads to find it I'd cut and paste it directly for you......... Any chance of someone looking for me.... I'm sure it was somewhere near that quote about the indexes....

Hi Mc,

I often book as soon as I can when I arrive in Vietnam. On some periods it seems that air tickets can be sold out.

I couldn't go to Phu Quoc Island in April this year. They had tickets for Saigon - PQ but they didn't have any ticket left for PQ - SG on the dates I wanted.

Sometimes people over emphasize the "sold out" situation before, on and after Tet & public holidays. If you're flexible, it's no big deal.

ThemMonkeys,

I don't think I agree with you. Open the airlines website at "contact us". Note down the address and phone number.

You still can ask your hotel staff where but I bet they may say they can book for you with 20% more than the real cost.

mcnrx,

Cambodia from VN"

You can purchase the air in advance from your local travel agent in the US or book on Expedia. The air tickets are paper (coupons) tickets as VN airlines do not issue electronic ticket for now.

We used Expedia to book the US/VN international air travel and opted for a reputable travel agent to issue the VN airlines tickets in advance as our VN to Cambodia itinerary is non negotiable.

Our trip is coming up in September.
