Visa Run to Myanmar

Hi, I'm looking at doing a Visa run to Myanmar, however unlike most who undertake the trip I'll be doing it for nothing more than a day out, visit somewhere new and new stamps in my passport. I will only have been in Thailand a week so will have 20 odd days left on my visa, will this be allowed ?

Also can anyone recommend a safe company that doesn't drive at breakneck speed as I want to enjoy the journey rather than be gripping my seat and watching the speedo all the way. Especially after reading about last months minibus crash.

Many thanks in advanced

Someone will know, but on re entry on a land crossing you will get 15 days. Exit may expire your initial 30 day entry permit.

The trip to Myanmar doesn't have a lot to offer. There are two options, the Andaman Club Casino or Victoria Point. The point is more interesting, but the town is small.

Its a long day trip, so I guess most companies will gas it. It will cost you USD10 for the day pass to Myanmar.

IMO, hire a car, do the loop Ranong, Chumpon, Surat Thani, Krabi and Phuket.

Yes Phuket to Ranong. Its just for a day while my mate is on a free diving course. Something to do rather than sit in my hotel room or a bar. Fancied visiting Myanmar as something really different, if only for 30 mins. Just dont want to risk my life doing it or get all that way and not being let in !!!

To be honest with you Royal, you wont catch me going on 1 of the Visa Run mini bus services. They all drive like maniacs and they will not listen to you if you ask them to slow down. We drive up ourselves when we go on Visa Runs to Myanmar. I recommend that you rather pay extra and get yourself a decent taxi driver who you can "monitor" if speed picks up. :-)

I think Brio2 is being very kind just describing Victoria Point as "small." We have done a visa run to there from Khao Lak but never again. When we arrived by longtail boat at the harbour we had to climb out onto the harbour wall over stinking rotting vegetables (I think it was vegetables!) floating in the sea to be met by a horde of locals (and non-locals) trying to get you to engage them as guides or take you somewhere for cheap, largely fake, goods especially alcohol and even Viagra - "not real, but cheap but may kill you" - nice!!! We couldn't wait to get our passports stamped and get back across to Ranong.

It took us about 3 1/2 hours from Khao Lak but we stayed in Ranong overnight and enjoyed a leisurely drive back taking all day stopping off at some great places along the way none of which you will see as you fly past at the break neck speed we saw the Visa Run mini-buses travelling at.

However, if you don't need to renew or extend your visa or your visa exemption - you don't say whether your 20 remaining days are on a tourist visa or on a 30 day visa exemption depending on your nationality - nor do you say how long you will be remaining in Thailand if you did leave and return. If it is more than 15 days then you will need to do another extension!

We always drive but a friend of mine says that Eve have pretty good drivers... at least not quite as mad as the others.

Do you realise that it's about 6 hours each way? Brio and Arandora's advice is spot on.

The visa isn't an issue. I fly into BKK and leave 13 days later, so its just I can say I've been to Burma and experianced somewhere totally different. Dont mind travelling for 5/6 hrs each way but dont want to do it at 100 mph. I would be staying in Khao Lak the night before having just come off a Similian liveaboard. I seriously considering whether to bother after what I heard and read so far. !!!!!

You will definitely experience "somewhere totally different" but in fairness, Victoria Point, is not representative of Myanmar. Most visitors are there for a few hours at most so the locals try and get as much as possible from visitors in the shortest possible time.

If you are travelling from Khao Lak though that reduces your time to travel to Ranong but I must admit I am confused (easily done!) Do either you or your diver friend need to leave Thailand/do a Visa Run? If you do then I would recommend you contact Boss of Cheaper than Hotel Taxis in Khao Lak on cheaper_khaolak@ymail.com He has a great fleet of cars, great, responsible drivers and the best rates in Khao Lak. He will get you up and back and, if possible, with stops at interesting places, at less than break neck speed.

If you don't need to do a visa run there are many opportunities to experience a different part of Thailand by getting off the tourist track.

Please give us a bit more information so we can help you more.
