CHON BURI - Jet ski operators in Pattaya are accused of extorting US$1,400 from two Indian tourists after "strong waves caused parked jet skis to hit each other" in the latest of the ongoing beach mafia scams in the tourist centre.
"The men demanded $2,000 from us. We were afraid and all we had was$1,400, or about 42,000 baht," the tourist said, according to the police officer. The gang accepted the payment and left.
"We visited Thailand because it is a popular tourist destination and because Thai people are nice and friendly. We've never thought that we wouldexperience this," one of them said.
Pol Lt Col Prasit Mansri, investigative officer at Pattaya police station, said the Indian tourists filed a complaint with police. They wanted police to inspect the actual cause of damage to the jet skis and determine whether it is worth the money they paid to the operators.
"Police will take legal action against the jet ski operators immediately if they are found guilty because they are damaging the country's image," Pol Lt Col Prasit said.
