The bus takes around 11 hours and most leave from Khao San road area. The train, in my opinion, is a far better option. A second-class sleeper berth (fan) costs about 500 baht, and you can get sleep far more easily than the bus. Definately the most comfortable way to go - unless you want to pay 6,800 baht for a return ticket with Bangkok Air. Your budget for a place to stay is very low indeed - hardly anywhere in tthe 5-1o dollar range anymore. Matlang resort on the northern-most end of Chaweng beach is clean and comfortable and their fan bungalows are 400 baht per night, just over 10 dollars. Lamai has places in that range too -also at the northern end of that beach.
