Flights done; Bangkok done; help me with Koh Samui please!

Hi Everyone,

I have had loads of help on the Bangkok and Thailand forum and with great advice sorted out flights from London and internal flights. As we are going in May2014 it was recommended I go East side of the islands and with that I will be going to Koh Samui from Bangkok with Bangkok Airways.

I will have 14 nights on the beach so I need to pick an AREA and HOTEL on the island which is AWAY FROM CHAWENG BEACH (think that is correct) as that is not for us after reading the TA reviews. It is too loud, too touristy and too commercialised.

We are looking for a quiet beach hotel/area where we can walk to sufficient bars/restaurants & souvenir shops to keep us occupied for the 2weeks. If we need more excitement or bigger shops we will travel to it for the day for shops etc.

We do not want totally nothing in the area but enough to go out for an evening and have a few bars/restaurants to choose from.

Money is not an issue BUT I do not want a 5* all-inclusive hotel we do not leave. We want to eat out everyday for dinner with breakfast/lunch at a nearby bar/beach bar or the hotel.

Impossible location??? I am researching Lamai Beach (think that is correct) as a few people on TA said South of Chaweng is quiter.

Any advice accepted to narrow down the area initially AND if you can help with hotel great. As many recommendations as possible and I'll tally up the votes for the areas.

Thanks in advance. And sorry introduction a bit long but I want to get it right......

I would choose Choeng Mon or Bophut over Lamai. Choeng Mon is a gorgeous white sand beach that is much, much quieter than Chaweng - no real shopping but about 30 places to eat both on the road and beachfront. Most hotels include breakfast so I would go with that but you are right, all inclusive is not what you want in Thailand. Bophut is different again, more shopping and upmarket with lovely restaurants but the beach is not as nice if that is a priority. It is more shell grit type sand and the bottom can be a bit slimy. Still swimmable though.

Have a look at some hotels in both these areas and see what you think. You can then come back with a few hotels to see opinions once you have narrowed it down.

Check out Sawasdee where you can search by price and location. Happy browsing :)

Hi there again :)

I would go with my favorite beach CHAWENG NOI BEACH. Chawrng noi beach hence the name small with just 6-7 resorts on the stip. There are just enough restaurants on the beach and more of layoffs restaurants on the main beach road. The chaweng noi beach located half way between south chaweng and Lamia beach. The beach here are white soft sand beautiful clear water. If you want more places to ea and drink just hop on songhteaw to south chaweng or further chaweng, bophut or even Lamai beach.

We stayed in Impiana big large room with balcony wiht ocean views.

Or have a look at

Imperail beach Samui resort

The Fair house beach resort

Vana Belle

New star villas

The Saraaan villas

These all ara in chaweng noi beach. Not sure your budget but have a brows and see what you think. Some are more expensive some are not.

Cheers,

Having stayed many times in both Lamai and Choeng Mon the latter gets my vote.

Choeng Mon is a great place to 'chill out', got a great beach with numerous restaurants within walking distance and well located to explore the island, Maenam/Bohput and Chaweng are only 10/15 minutes away.

As JustAllie says, look up www.sawasdee.com for the choice of available hotels, theres a good range to select from.

Another vote for the Choeng Mon beach area which seems to offer all that you want with short journeys to Fisherman's Village in Bophut or to Chaweng if you must !! (Both journeys about 300 baht one way by taxi or 60 baht per person on a Songthaew)

The main hotels on Choeng Mon beach in price order are as follows:

5* Muang Samui Villas & Suites http://www.muangsamui.com/choengmon/

4/5* Sala Samui http://www.salaresorts.com/samui/

3/4* Imperial Boat House imperialhotels.com/imperialboathouse/default…

3* The White House http://www.samuithewhitehouse.com/

Each obviously have their own bars and restaurants but in addition there are several other independent bars & restaurants on the beach and about a dozen others on the (quiet) main road including a really good Indian called Akbar abracadabra-samui.com/akbar-indian-restauran…

In my opinion the beach is the best on Koh Samui.

Hi Everyone (and G'day once more sweet pea 6468!),

After reading your comments and researching TA I have decided on CHOENG BEACH area.

Reason is we went to Maui several years ago and went to a place which was very exclusive (5/6 hotels in area) with Clint Eastwood and Will Smith's holiday home nearby! BUT it was too quiet and too exclusive for us (me) and we travelled everyday a mile down the road to a livelier place with more restaurants and bars. STILL QUIET but busy enough.

With about 30 restaurants / bars within walking distance of CHOENG BEACH it seems more ideal for a 2 week stay and therefore negating travelling every night to main Chaweng.

Thanks for all your advice. FINAL THING......anyone help me with a hotel?

I will of course look at the hotels section of CHOENG BEACH and the photos and make notes from there. Where did you stay on CHOENG BEACH? When you walked around CHOENG BEACH did you see a hotel/place where you thought next time we'll go there.

Almost there..... Thanks Again.

In cheongmon beach if I can afford I will go for Sala Samui. Sala Samui is a very good chains luxury properties in Thailand.

The second would be Maung Samui villas and suite

In cheongmon of you want beach front dinning with both Thai and seafood go for Samui honey cottage restaurant. You literally sit on the beach sand between your toes.

Sounds like Paradise !!!

8. Re: Flights done; Bangkok done; help me with Koh Samui please!

After reading more reviews about CHEONG BEACH area I think it will be 'just' too quiet for us....looking for an area a little bit busier than this. Thoughts on SOUTH CHAWENG? This seems more ideal, 20/25 minutes walk into Chaweng which we would love before it gets too dark and more choice or hotels and restaurants/bars.

So rewind back a bit and any suggestions on hotel choices (with nice soft white sand beach - as I am aware some parts have rocky beach).

Same criteria as before.

Thanks 1baloo (need a holiday after all this research!)

South chaweng beach hotels check out these following

Buri Rasa village ( the main pool bit small)

Poppies beach resort ( Thai styles bungalow small boutiques types resort)

Banana fans sea resort ( Thai styles bungalow )

Centara grand beach ( big resort big pool big ground) go for deluxe pool suite

Samui resortel ( modern pool on deck ) go for ocean pool villas

These will take 20-25 mins by foot to central of chaweng.,central of chaweng is where the actions is.

There are plenty of beach bars and restaurants as well as on the main beach road.

Happy researching
