Chaweng V Lamai

My wife and I are heading to Koh Samui at the begining of May this year. We are not sure however which resort to head towards.

We are thinking of spending 5 nights on the island, but we are not sure weather to stay in Chaweng or Lamai. We know that Chaweng is the livelier of the two, but how busy it is?

We are after a large choice of resturants & a few busy bars. Is this what we will find or is it more 18-30's and we should head to Lamai?

What is it like in Lamai?

It really depends what you like.

Chaweng is more lively but still pretty laid back compared to other parts of Thailand.

It is busier than Lamai and has a lot more restaurants and bars to chose from.

Have not stayed in Lamai but have visited. Nice but prefer Chaweng.

Chaweng is definitely not 18 - 30's only. A few places and side streets around Central Chaweng have more clubs and bars that younger people tend to go for but besides that you'll find plenty of restaurants and bars more suited to what you're looking for.

The southern end of Chaweng is less crowded but still within easy walking distance along the main beach road to many bars and restaurants or a short Songthew ride if you don't feel like the walk.

Hi

Agree with Matt.

Chaweng divided in to 3 parts

North chaweng here you will find lots of big resorts ( but not high rise) the beach are ok still walking distance to bars restaurants and shops.

Central chawrng this is the busy part hustle and bustle with everything in your door steps.

South chaweng beautiful beach quiet but walking distance to bars and restaurants both on beach and on the main chaweng beach road.

I prefer chawrng over Lamai too.

hi guys

there are more of everything in chaweng than lamai and lamai is somewhat more laid back ,and cheaper this means more backpackers stay here

there are however many expats in lamai area because its more quiet

theres a huge selection of restaurants in lamai and more in chaweng

beach republic is in lamai and popular as is buddy beach and shopping centre

you might find you will try both places while you are here anyway

if you read the TripAdvisor rankings lamai is ranked 9 and chaweng 18

cheers

If you are only staying 5 nights, not sure why you would through the hasstle of splitting your accommodation between two places, too much effort , checking in and and out then having to go thru the same again plus possible restrictions of not being being able to get into your room at the 2nd place until later in the day.

Lamai and Chaweng are not that far apart, choose your base then head over to the other have a meal and walk round and see what it is like.

South Chaweng is quieter than Central chaweng I would check out all the hotels between the Samui Paradise and the Banana Fan as that's the best stretch of beach.

Lamai is more relaxed but Chaweng has better restaurants and many more options.

The one thing about Lamai that not many people mention is that the sleazier side of Thailand is more visible, with many girlie bars. Bugs some more than others but for the unaware it can come as a bit of a shock.
