Is there a good place to snorkel in Koh Samui?

We'll be there in early July and LOVE snorkeling. Is there an island nearby (or on Samui itself) that is good for that? Thanks

i think khunwilko must be having a little fun ..i have heard there are 1 or 2 spots where the snorkelling is ok but the water in samui is generally not clear ,hence the many snorkelling trips that go to koh tao daily ,much much better..

Yes, Samui is NOT a place for snorkeling, you won't see anything here, have to go to Koh Tao for excellent snorkeling, or at least to Koh Phangan.

Thank goodness common sense is prevailing and K.Whilkos posts are being removed.

There IS good snorkelling OFF Koh Samui. You will see numerous ads at the main beaches for day trips which usually include fishing (nothing serious here), lunch at an uninhabited island (where the barbie is the only man-made thing on the ísland) and snorkelling nearby. They usually leave from the south coast and spend the day at sea - transfer from Chaweng/lamai included in the price. Used to be 650 baht for the day but I reckon 1000 up now.

Hi,

As already said Koh Samui is not the best place for snorkelling. Even off Samui a little bit there's generally not much to see...hence 99.99% of companys go to Koh Tao/Koh Nangyuan or Ang-Thong Marine park which are WAY better, especially Koh Tao/Koh Nangyuan.

Yes, there are a couple of places that'll take you just off Samui but don't expect anything spectacular though, i've known many people to come back from a trip just off Samui to be very let down by the lack of anything to see.

Seatran Discovery leaves at 8am from Bangrak. This includes pick-up and drop off at the end of the day, light breakfast, 2 sites around Koh Tao/Koh Nangyuan and buffet style lunch for 1,700 Baht. You arrive back approx 5pm.

Something like this is by far the better option and you'll not be let down by it. I know many different companies though who do trips all at varying prices depending on the type of boat as some have speedboats, some have slow boats etc etc.

I just had 2 Swedish girls on a trip to Koh Tao/Koh Nangyuan and when they came back they described their day as "absolutely perfect", speaks for itself really :-)

Cheers, Marti.

Naturally Koh tao is better to SEE marine life but I have had some great trips off samui - no whale sharks of course but still shoals of colourful fish. It's not a trip for the serious snorkeller but reaslly good fun - catching the fish you are going to eat for lunch e.t.c. It is a different kind of trip is all.

BANGKOKGAS:

Yes, no problem i see your point but the sea is just not good off Samui at all, vision can be so limited and the last thing you want is people who are expecting something and then getting nothing.

The companies and figures speak for themselves. Most will laugh if you ask them to take customers snorkelling off Samui though.

The difference between Samui and Koh Nangyuan is a world apart, you can look down in the sea from the boat and it's crystal clear with all sorts of ocean/marine life to be seen as well as a great picture opportunity as well as it's beautiful up there. I say go Koh Tao/Koh Nangyuan and people will not be let down as believe me i've spoken to a few who have went just off Samui and they were not happy people at all.

Just returned from Samui. Koh Tao is definitely the best. However nowhere near as good as Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. I think we have been really spoilt. Still good though - worth the trip cause there were good patches. Still nice tropical fish. Samui is not good for snorkelling - water too cloudy (well it was when we were there).
