Mozzies in October?

A bit concerned about Dengue fever it sounds awful, how common is it? Are the mozzies a pest during the day as well as in evenings? Our accommodation will have Air Con so hope ok to sleep. What would be the average weather at that time? I know rain will still be around but is it persistant at that time? We plann on at least a week in Chiang Mai from 23rd October. Thanks.

Late October the worst of the rain is definitely over, though in exceptional years it continues for a bit. Mostly likely though the weather will be beautiful (if a little hot).

Aircon hotels will have screens on the windows so mosquitos stay out. If there's still mosquitos around ask them to spray the room.

Dengue does occur (anywhere in the tropics) and isn't fun. So you just want to minimize mosquito bites. This applies especially at times when mosquitos are most prevalent, i.e. dawn and dusk (and in dark, damp places at other times.)

Use repellant when you have to be outside and stationary at those times, or just take a break inside during those times.

We were there last October and had a good week weather wise. We have a few overcast days with a couple of light showers - and there were very few mosquitos (at least far less than our previous two visits). Everything is very green at this time of the year after the wet season - and it is still not too hot (moving towards the cooler months).

Of course use a DEET spray to protect from Dengue day and night.

If you have dinner at one of the restaurants near the river you should take even more care as this is worst area for mosquitos, don't forget to spray the soles of your feet if your wearing sandals or flip flops.

Mosquitoes are in abundance any time of the year. But Oct would be about the worst as water levels are highest at the end of the rainy season and water accumulation in pools on the ground and in swamps is at maximum. Mosquitoes hunt most actively at sunrise and sunset.

Dengue mosquitoes bite during the day, not just dawn and dusk. So it's essential to use a good repellent at all times that you're out and about. They don't like air conditioning, so your room is likely to be OK. I'd still spray or use a mozzie zapper though.

You need to protect yourself against the ones in the day! Our resort had a ton of them but it was due to all of the water features. We did buy bug spray from home but they seemed to love it so the lovely people on this forum directed me to the local pharmacy where we purchased this roll on bug spray (forgot the name) it's in a clear glass bottle that has a roller and it worked extremely well, there was also one that' started with an S that was also great.
