3 days in Chiang Mai

was needing some advice. we are heading off to CM at the end of december. (2 adults & 2 young kids) we have 3.5 days there over new years celebrations. one full day we are spending at Patara elephant tours. any suggestions for the other 2.5 days?? we want to see as much as possible without overdoing it with 2 small children. does everything open or close on new years day?

any advice/suggestions are most appreciated.

If you are there on a Sunday, try the Sunday market which opens/starts at around 4pm to about midnight.

I wouldn't think anything will close on New Year's day.

Many of the local shops and markets will close for new years, but anything tourist related will be open.

The new year in Thailand is actually celebrated in April with the songkran festival.

Have a look at the top 20 things to do in the FAQ - top right of this page. Lots of ideas and includes our favorite things to do.

Most people would include a trip to Doi Suthep - a stunning temple on top of the mountain overlooking Chiang Mai. The Saturday and Sunday markets are very popular. A trip to some of the local arts and craft villages - like the umbrella is another popular thing to do.

December is a nice time to walk around Chiang Mai because it is not too hot - so do spend some time exploring. Get a good map and explore the old city, including pit stops for coffee, milk shakes and a nice meal.

Have a meal at a riverside restaurant or cafe, explore the night bazaar, visit the zoo.....

Have fun.
