Private boat rental is now expensive because of the price of gasoline and the price keeps changing. Expect to pay 2000+ Thai Baht (not each) if you want to stop at villages along the way. If not just take the regular boat as there will probably be only locals on it as most tourists go from Thaton to Chiang Rai, much cheaper.

Enjoy,

Last time I took the boat (last year) the departure time was 10:30 AM and only once a day. I would arrive at the boat dock early. There is a good Thai restaurant across the street where you can wait and have coffee etc.

Doi means mountain so it is Doi Inthanon and Baan means town or village so it is Baan Thaton as it is not a mountain but a town.

Doi Inthanon is 90 kilometers south south west of Chiang Mai and Baan Thaton is around 290 kilometers straight north of Chiang Mai.

Hope this helps,

Sorry Baan is 190 kilometers north of Chiang Mai NOT 290.
