It takes about 3 to 4 hours by car, depending on how heavy your foot is.

Hi don't know how Mae Sot got mentioned here as it is in the opposite direction from the Golden Triangle.

With the police check points and torn up road from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai figure a least 4 hours.

I would take the 8 AM flight by the new SGA flights to Chiang Rai (40 minutes) rent a car there, go to the Golden Triangle, spend the evening on the banks of the Mae Kong river in Chiang Sean the return to the airport for the flight back to Chiang Mai at 10:10 or fly directly back to Bangkok.

It takes 3 to 4 hours.

It's better to do it with a comfortable automatic sedan than with a 4 WD (avoid the Suzuki Carribean, much too noisy). If you're a confident driver you will enjoy the mountain roads and the long straight streches in the plain. There's a lot of overtaking to do, especially slow trucks and buses. That could be a nightmare for unexperienced drivers. Along the road you will find a lot of small stalls selling local specialties. If you're not in a rush, take the time to stop here and there and enjoy.

If you think of the Golden Triangle as the official spot marketed by the TAT, you'll have to pass Chiang Rai and take the scenic road to Chiang Saen along the Mekong river.

If you think of the Golden Triangle as a region, you'll entered it when you reach Chiang Rai (buses to this trip in 3 hours). From there you can see the nearby Doi Mae Salong, Mae Sai border city and Chiang Saen (better to sleep in one of those places than in Chiang Rai).

Driving is the best solution if you want to spend a few days exploring the region. The Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai leg is the most demanding in concentration and skills.
