Mekhong Thai whiskey

Hello people of TA. I'm due to fly out to Thailand tomorrow and my trip is fully planned. SO EXCITED! Locations: Bangkok, phucket, and Phi Phi.

One small question: A friend has asked me to bring back a bottle (or 2) of Mekhong Thai whiskey. I've done a search and can't find anything on TA so hoping someone could help.

Is this readily available? I'm assuming Bangkok best bet? Do I need to go to a specific location/ area to buy? How much baht am I expecting to spend? Money isn't an issue I just like to be prepared.

Thanks in advance!

Ps thank you to all the people who post here regularly. I'm not a poster myself but I do use TA as a source of great advice.

Simon

Yep, it's everywhere. So perhaps buy it just as you're about to leave, so you don't have to carry it around. One thing to keep in mind is that whenever you buy it, it is only sold for a couple of hours from midday, then again after 5pm until late at night. And it's not a whisky. It's just a golden spirit like Sang Som - more of a rum.

Saeng Som and Mehkong our Rums it says on the bottle.u can try Hong Thong or Blend 285 for whisky but in reality they all suck. Regency for brandy is a better choice. all under 300 baht

MaeKhong whiskey is actually rum :)

Its available at every 7-11 and mom and pop shop.

For some reason it doesnt taste the same when you bring it back home.

There's only one way in my opinion, and that's to take one of each back!

In Bangkok I never see Mekhong rum in the convenience stores that I visit. You might find it in well stocked higher end supermarkets and specialist liquor stores. The only sure place I know is the Suvarnabhumi airport duty free shops where they sell it at a quite inflated price.

Mekhong used to be the run-of-the-mill cheap Thai rum that had an interesting side flavor resembling petrol. Competitors mowed them over but they have tried to make a comeback by rebranding as a premium product.

Every 7-ELEVEN sells Sang Som (40%) which is pretty close to the original Mekhong as I recall it. No awful side flavor but the taste is quite sharp if you drink it neat. Also Hong Thong (35%) is available with a sweeter taste.

If you go to a supermarket you find also other Thai rums.

Note that chain convenience stores and supermarkets sell alcohol only 1100-1400 and 1700-2400. Mom and pop shops sell any time breaking the law.

Sangsom is easier on the head/brain.

Forgot about the price: 750 ml bottle 300-400 bahts depending on the brand. Mekhong at airport was over 700 bahts. Suvarnabhumi duty free is not good value in general.

Fantastic info. Bit of a mix of answers but it's reassuring its readily available. With the fall back of getting it at the airport upon return. Thanks all.
