Elephant Trek

Can anyone with local knowledge please tell me if Chiang Mai is the only place where you can "ride on an elephant". We are doing a a 5 day stay in Bangkok in September and would love to see an elephant up close. Or is it possible to do a day trip up to Chiang Mai ?

Riding elephant is popular among tourists so there are many places offer this kind of service like in Pattaya, Sampran, Kanchanaburi, Ayudhaya, etc.

If you like to visit Chiangmai just for riding elephant in a day, trip is possible but by air. May be you could visit Ayudhya instead, jsut 1.5 hrs from BKK.

Hope this help !

There are many places in Bangkok where you can ride an elephant (Dreamworld, Rose Garden, Kanchanaburi, etc) however the place we enjoyed most (elephantwise!) was Samphran elephant ground. You only need half a day to visit and the best thing is how close you can get to the elephants, they have the babies and younger elephants roaming around and you can feed them and pat them, very cute!, you can also go on a 20 minute elephant trek (which believe me is enough on the backside) and there is an elephant show as well. We arranged this tour through an ad in a tourist magazine in Bangkok, we rang them and arranged for them to pick us up the next day, from memory we paid about 600 baht each (there were six of us so we had a private mini van).
