My family of four adults are looking to fly out of LAX to BKK from May 11-31 and had previously been watching economy seats on a flight on Cathay Pacific but the price has remained high ($1550). I am now looking at the much cheaper China Airways flight ($1032) with times that work for us and have been reading about the refurbished 747 cabins.
After doing a lot of research on seatguru.com and airlinequality.com, I'm still a little hesitant to book since they are considered a 4 star airline (Cathay is a 5) and its unclear about whether all of their 747's have been retrofitted yet. Anyone know how far they are along on their updates? Do you think it would be best to continue to wait and see if Cathay drops in price? I'd read somewhere that the difference in airlines overall service, comfort and food was the difference between a Honda and a Cadillac :)
I also might mention that we have flown ANA to BKK in 2009 and had a good experience but economy was a bit cramped. We are fairly short people - 5'-1" to 5'-6" so we aren't as concerned about leg room as some are so the sliding forward seats on CP might be better? In flight entertain is going to be important since I can't sleep on flights and the option to plug in electronics will be very valuable.
Also, any difference in having a 3 hour layover in Hong Kong on the CP flight vs 1 hour in TPE on CA? I would assume the airline would have our connecting flights in the same terminal and making an hour connection would be feasible?
