How many nights to get the highlights of bangkok & must dos

We are going Thailand & Bali for 3 weeks Mar 25- April 15. How many nights are required to get the must does in Bangkok? What are the must does? We are not musuem people. We would like to be in a safe, lots to walk to (sho[s/restaurants/bars), and close to public transportation. We are also interested in going up north a little for a day trip to see floating market and riding elephants, and suggestions on tours. Where is the best are to stay in Bangkok, we would like to stay under $100 night. How far is BKK to hotel areas we should consider, how much taxi ride?

We were planning on 4 or 5 days for bangkok, 5 days phuket, 2 days phi phi, 4 bali, and 3 lombak. Does this sound good?

Thanks for any help!

Too many days in Phuket.3 nights will suffice! Koh Samui and Krabi are nicer, btw.

You itinerary doesn't include the north (Chiangmai) which is well worth a visit. There's many answers to your questions in the Top Questions on the right, and those on the main Thailand forum page are worth visiting - Airport Transport, Taxis, Getting Around, Floating Markets (which are not up north), etc.

I'd also give very expensive Phuket a miss in favour of either Krabi or Khao Lak.

Walking in Bangkok can be a problem, especially in March/April which is the hottest time of the year. Being near the skytrain (BTS) is ideal for easy access to most things. Take a look at the Patumwan Princess, the Novotel Siam, Siam@Siam, Intercontinental, Holiday Inn Ploenchit hotels.

Look for hotel on Sukhumvit road. has many restaurants, bars, all within walking distance, and public transportation on the BTS skytrain and the MRT subway. Tons of shopping can be reache via the skytrain in about 5-10 minutes at MBK, Siam Square, Saim Discovery, Siam Center, and Siam Paragon malls.

Forget about Chiang Mai. Very little in the way of special things. If you have an excessive amount of time, do it then, otherwise exhaust primary destinations first.
