Just wondering.. This is our first trip to Bangkok and Chiang Mai and we have no idea in terms of streets or place names (we do know a few from all the research we have done) but is there maps or a GPS (hand held) we can buy?

We wanted to travel around using the trains and we do quite a bit of walking, but we like to know where we are going first.

Any recommendations?

For Bangkok:

For Chiangmai (Amazing!):

A nice paper "map" for both is Nancy Chandler's offerings. Although the map, itself, is a bit cartoonish, the guide that comes with it is amazing.

Almost every bookshop will sell good maps, but check the language first. Some are only in Thai, some in Thai and English, and some in English. Dual language is useful for getting place names right.

There are Google Maps for hotels and guesthouses in Bangkok. You find the link here:

For Bangkok:

You find maps of restaurants and markets on this blog too.

For Chiang Mai:

You find a map for the nightlife (live music and discos) on this blog too.
