Khao san road or Sukhumvit area?

Can anyone recommend a good hostel to stay at in either of these areas? We are 2 backpackers travelling in october on a budget and would like to be in amongst it all! We are looking for somewhere that is clean and in a good location! 1st time to Bangkok and we would like to make the most of it! If anyone has any advice that would be great!

Thanks

Hi;

Khao san is the place you should be heading to for all backpackers fellows. Everything is Cheap in there.You can have a bed for 300baht a night , walk in and you have it .A lot of food stalls and side walk eatings and plenty of beers. Sukhumvit road entertainments area seems like a couple notches above Khao san with plenty of old timers looking for a range of things to spend their money in there. I stay in the Sukhumvit area and like the environments here with my Thai's girl friend . It has better hotels ,more expensive , plenty of restaurants & internet cafes and bars & close to BTS Skytrain .

I visited Bangkok & Sukhumvit 2x in year 2007 and I shall be in there again this spring 2008. That is really something interesting keeps me coming back to Bangkok and the Sukhumvit road .

Enjoy,

There's lots and lots of budget accommodation in the Khao San Road area and no need to pre-book. Go there, look around. Maybe only pre-book for one night if you're arriving late at night. A tip: look on Soi Rambutri rather than KSR itself for a better class of place and not much more expensive. See khaosanroad.com/all_accommodation/all_accomm…

Another vote for Khao San Rd area. Sukhumvit is nice, but KSR is "the centre of the backpacking universe", to coin Di Caprios phrase. As much as I normally hate tourist ghettos, I love KSR area. All the hip youg Thai hang out there too, and the best bars in BKK are all nearby. KSR comes alive at night, don't hang around in the day. During the day, get out & explore the city - head for the river, ride riverboats (do not pre-pay any tickets, all boats sell them on-board, do not get a personal 'tour'), and if you are feeling adventurous, the canal boats are crazy! My wife hated them, I loved them.

We have stayed at New Siam No 2 x 3 times now and love it. The website is www.newsiam.net - it is located on Soi Rambuttri just near Khao San Rd and a great area!!

Thanks for everyones advice! i have checked out the web links that some of you have given and I like what I see. We are arriving quite late so I would definately like to prebook atleast our first night there! We are leaning towards KSR at the moment. Does anyone know of any other web links that may be useful for hostels in this area? Are the transport options quite good from KSR?

Everyone had been very helpful, thanks!

Hi amanda! the chao phraya river is quite close to KSR and using the public river boats is a cheap, efficient way to get around the city. Khlong Saen Sab (khlong means canal) is not far either...do a search on TA, there's been several threads that discuss this option. get a bkk bus map when you arrive, too. its not hard to use the public buses and it's the form of city transport used by everyday thais. often when i use saen sab boats, i'm the only foreigner on a boat of maybe 100 people.

A great website for lots of accommodation links is www.travelfish.org - check out the 'feature stories' section too!
