From the Himalayan Times:

KATHMANDU: The sub-committee - formed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) - today took a decision about the hotels and resorts that are located inside the Chitwan National Park (CNP).

The panel decided to extend the deadline for the closure of the hospitality establishments in the CNP till 2011.

“We’re likely to submit the report tomorrow,” said Mahendra Dhoj GC, a committee member. The government has declared 2011 as the Nepal Tourism Year. Seven hotels in the CNP were closed since July 16. The matter has come to a head over the timeframe for the closure of these hotels.

Meanwhile, the case did its usual circuitous rounds of the CNP, the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation and the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation till the PAC special sub-panel took charge of the matter.

The panel, headed by Narayan Dahal, was urged to find an amicable solution to the crisis.

“We held rigorous discussion with the stakeholders and undertook a field visit as well. A few options were mulled over, include letting the hotels to

operate till 2011 in view of the new agreement,” said Dahal.

The CNP authorities had earmarked areas to the hotels’ management to conduct their own safaris.

Dahal opined that the hoteliers should get some incentives since they were playing a stellar role in employment generation in the tourist spot.

“The closure also raises question marks about the livelihood of around 800 employees who are working in these hotels. But, one thing is certain. They have to move out from the CNP within the timeframe,” he added.

Initially, the panel was urged to submit its report within 15 days, which had elapsed on August 25. The matter now rests with the PAC once it receives the detailed report, complete with recommendations, from the special sub-committee.

From the Chief Executive, Tiger Tops

Negotiations for the renewal of the leases are ongoing and the trend is positive. The broad principle of renewal has been agreed with the Ministry of Forests. The Cabinet is due to take a decision in this regard shortly. Thereafter the detailed terms have to be finalised.

Tiger Tops will be ready for business, come 15th September when we re- open, after the monsoon.

We will keep you updated on any new developments.

Marcus Cotton

Chief Executive

It appears that the situation is on-going, but the 7 lodges inside the Park have, I believe, been given various options for the future. There's a suspicion that it's a move to screw more money out of the lodges as discussions go on about new leases . . . . but the 7 do employ about 800 people !

Hello there,

Yeah, you have heard the right thing. Currently, the lodges inside the park are closed and there is doubt that it will be renewed or not by the Government of Nepal. It was said that the lodges and people inside the park has disturbed the wildlife inside the park. So, it's doubt that the lodges will reopen or not.

Most of the people are saying that the lodges inside the park should be closed but the government has not decided yet about what should be done. Let's hope that it will reopen.

Yeah, I think that's great idea. Bardia can be good alternative for Chitwan National Park and they are similar each other.

Most people search for Chitwan because it's more popular than Chitwan. But Bardia is also so nice for Jungle Safari.

It is still closed as of now , but firm decission has not been taken as yet . But this does not mean that you can not enjoy the activities of park . You can have hotels in Sauraha ( on the boarder of park ) and enjoy equally .

I have just returned from Nepal 13th to 20th Oct 2009 and stayed at the Parkland hotel at Chitwan. It is located outside the park but was fantastic, the staff and the rooms were great, the food was good and plenty of it. My guide there was Hari, what a star this man is,a mountain of knowledge and so polite. Elephant safari into the jungle got to see rhino, crocs, monkeys, deer and countless birds. I can whole heartedly recommend this place.

Thanks so much for the update. I'm glad our travel company was on top of this and has rebooked our reservation at such a good place. Glad you had a good time. Was your elephant safari within the park itself? Do we still have a chance to see tigers? I know it is slim
