10 days (5 in Pokhara and 5 in Kat?)

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if 10 days is well spent by splitting it in half between Kathmandu and Pokhara?

I am hoping to stay in only 2 hotels for this time, and do day tours from each hotel. I am only looking for the most basic, easiest of walks as I am not that fit and I usually suffer from the altitude sickness in these places. So...easy does it for me!

Does this sound OK to you to spend 10 days in Nepal this way?

I spent two months in various parts of Nepal. Outside of heavy trekking in the obvious places (everest, annapourna, etc), I think that Pokhara is hands down the most beautiful part of Nepal. The lake there is wonderful, the town is well kept. Definitely worth spending time there. I think the 5/5 plan is good. Are you going to be driving to Pokhara? Flying? I took a bus, and it was an 8 hour trip one way. Cheap, crowded and lots of fun (we rode on top of the bus!), but time consuming.

No we plan to fly at this stage. I am happy to hear you really enjoyed Pokhara, it makes it all the more exciting to know that it is well worth the 5 days there!

We had a great 10 days in Nepal in December 07. We sepnt 4 nights in Kathmandu (2 at the beginning & 2 at the end) & managed to see all the sights there & staying near the Thamel area was great. We were on a tour with a driver & a 4 wheel drive. From Kathmandu we spent 2 nights in Chitwan National Park which was fantastic & I highly recommend it. We drove to Pokhara for 2 nights, with a white water rafting adventure on the way. Pokhara is a beautiful friendly, picturesque place. We then flew back to Kathmandu & drove to Nagarkot for a night. The views from there of the Himalayas is spectacular! We hiked the next day to a beautiful temple & returned to Kathmandu. We hope to go back soon to do some trekking!

All of the replies are good advice, especially use Kathmandu stay for the beginning and end of your journey... and in that time, get out by going to Nagarkot, Dhulikhel etc. Pokhara is indeed beautiful by the lake, and my Nepali friend thought the handgliding was absolutely fantastic (and safe, use the foreign operators).... but the city itself is colorless, architecturally dull, and void of the rich religious culture of KTM valley. If your schedule is tight, then fly between the cities as bus travel is unpredictable. Always drink bottled water.

I have just got back from Nepal and it was fantastic. You could break your jouney between Kathmandu and Pokhara by staying overnight in the beautiful village of Bandipur. You should definetly go to Chitwan if you get the chance. It is an oasis of tranquility. We did not have any problems with altitude on our trek

great suggestions, I'd also support sunrise out of Pokhara, a taxi will get you 95% of the way up Sargokot (sp)

Also, consider 3 days in Pokara, with two in the jungle of Chitwan. Riding an elephant while looking for rhinos is a grat experience. You can fly back to KTM from Chitwan, the airport is 9-miles away.
