Entertainment in Kathmandu

Hi everyone,

I have decided to visit Nepal this summer instead of Thailand which I visit every year. I am not a trekker or climber or interested in tours. I just want to know whether one can have fun in Kathmandu. Are the hotels guest friendly like Thailand or do they charge for guests? Your tips will help me a lot to take my decision. Thanks in advance.

not sure what you mean by fun??? Nepal is nothing like Thailand. Pepole are friendly, yes, but summer is monsoon and tourists are few. Much more reserved culture and few of the tourist attrations that Thailand has.

Well Kingdom of Thailand and The Kingdom of Nepal are very different countries. In Nepal Kathmandu is the happenin place. Their are lotsa party places and the hotel staff are genrally helpful and polite. They will not charge you like they do in Thailand.

A few of Kathmandu top party places are

Galaxy , Everest hotel

Platinum Yak n Yeti

Rox Hyatt Regency

Splash bar Radisson

Jatra , Thamel

Thamel is the place to go to if you are looking for anything lively in Kathmandu. We visited in September it rained for the 3 days after that it was lovely, it is also very cheap, a great place to visit.

www.partynepal.com

you can find out about upcoming parties and places to hang out there.

It's a far more dignified spot than Bangkok nightlife, but plenty of fun to be had.

I'd reccomend Upstairs for live jazz... Some of the Thamel bars for drinks and live music (New Orleans, Maya etc), and places like Galaxy etc for discos.

Kathmandu is quite different to Thai resorts.

The nightlife is lively on a weekend when many volunteer workers come into town for some r & r.

During the week it is much quieter, tourists tend to hang out in Kathmandu between treks, flights and tours. It's like a base camp for the rest of the country rather than a destination all to itself.

I often spend a month there on business and hang out in some of the cool bars like Full Moon, Sam's Bar and the Upstairs Bar but these are like small watering holes rather than huge party venues.

Well, I don't know how "dignified" Kathmandu life is compared to Thailand, as one writer said. Their dirty laundry is not hung out in the open. If this is referring to se*x shops, well yes. But Kathmandu is loaded with girl dancing bars now, not the Bangkok variety, but they are basically pick up places where locals often get drunk, as they do in the discos and some other bars, and can be trouble. They are breeding grounds for fights, which many of the local guys like to do... but not always of course. The list of night spots that KTMSYD gave are good, and there are other ones as well.

If you are single and plan to have overnight guests, I would check with the reception. Perhaps it would be fair to offer to pay for a double room rather than a single room.

If you are looking for a girlfriend, it will be more problematic in KTM with its culture except for some dancing bars which have mostly girls but some boy dancers too. Beware of any actual prostitition places, as these girls are often picked up off the street. AIDS is mostly in the heterosexual community, and certainly in prostitution rings. You can meet guys anywhere. A big smile is the simple icebreaker.

But KTM and BKK are nothing alike at all. Kathmandu is in a depressing state now with its infrastructure problems, black outs, shortages, water and air pollution, congestion, and political demonstrations which frequently closes down businesses and transportation. It is a third-world country first and foremost, and simply does not have the ammenities of a Bangkok nightlife. But when you ask to compare the two cities, I get frightened even thinking of the dissimilarities. But can you have fun... definitely.
