Okavango Car Hire - TO AVOID!

we just returned from a trip in Namibia and Okavango was definetely the worst aspect of this trip. The director is an unfriendly, nasty and dishonnest person. First, he cancelled via mail our insurance during our trip, because we hadnt asked him approvation of our itinerary, then upon our return, he basically "dissected" the cars in the only objective of finding any kind of scratch or any other detail that he could charge us with. Example: he charged 700 Euros for a very small scrach on the dashboard where we had set our GPS.

Look for another car hiring company!

I used Okavango and would like to say how good they were, I have recommended them on this site before and have no hesitation in doing so again.

They take a lot of care to suggest up to date info on roads you shouldn't go etc. You get a great motor here offering more than others do , fridge, 2 x spares ( chunky tyres etc ) and a fair price too.

Considering the damage the OP got off easily with just a 700pound fee

I lost a hubcap on a rental car in South Africa and it cost me about $100 to replace it and pay the fees to process the claim

Okavango Car Hire is a respected company. The owner looks after his clients and vehicles. Driving in Namibia can be dangerous and checking your itinerary with him can save you time and road problems. Ultimately, if you break the insurance terms, there's nothing he can do apart from cancel it. We have just come back from Namibia and Okavango Car Hire was a great and reliable rental service. Rudi and Joannes were super helpful and I would recommend it

We just returned from 2 weeks in Namibia with a Hi Lux diesel from this company. The vehicle was well fitted out with everything we needed for a camping trip. One of the best aspects of the vehicle was that it had wide heavy ply off road tyres, ideal for the many gravel roads you will encounter on a trip there. All in all a good company to deal with, pick up/drop off at airport which is 47km out of town for no additional cost. Just be clear with them when you pick up the car about what is and what is not included in the insurance package you take.

The poster thought they could use this forum to ruin the car hire company's reputation but thanks to the members, the truth shines through. 2 Comments about the photos on the fb page:

1.) I shudder to think what damage was done to the environment in taking those vehicles where they went.

2.) That nice little pile of grass kindling lodged between the exhaust pipe / drive shaft / gas tank could have taught someone a nasty lesson! Probably the car hire compnay would have been blamed for that too.

We hired a vehicle for 3 weeks from Okavango car hire and were extremely pleased by the company. The vehicle was brand new and was a very good car, and we had absolutely no problems, not even a puncture. The camping equipment was all in good order and the staff were very helpful, talking us through the route before we set off.

We can also vouch for Okavango car hire, we hired a Daihatsu Terios for 3 weeks, 4 of us pretty much lived in it and did a lot of mileson some rough Namibian roads . Rudi, the owner, had a look at our itinerary before we set off and gave us really good advice on our route and also great driving tips. A taxi ointo the back of us in Tsumeb and we were dreading he'd find some damage when we returned the car. In fact, the impact had ben taken by the spare wheel cover and apart from a smal scuff all was well and we weren't charged any extra. Unlike some UK car hire companies we felt that Rudi had been really reasonable about it (and he gave us good advice over the phone when we were at the police station!). Really nice people, really good service and a great and reasonably-priced car.
