Hiring 2WD car - can we also hire a fridge?

Hi, we are interested in self drive but don't feel we need a 4WD so looking to hire an ordinary car. We will bring our own ground tent, stove, etc but would like to have a fridge. Can you hire these for ordinary cars or do they only come with 4WD?

It is possible, have a look here. www.natron.net/tour/camping/hiree.html They hire out all camping gear, fridges etc.

You must just be carefull when leaving the fridge on, the battery can drain overnight and than you sit there the next morning and can't start the vehicle. It's also not good for the battery and if you do it one time to often the battery will "break" and won't charge correctly and you will have problems all the time. The best would be to switch the fridge off, when you go to bed and only switch on again when the vehicle is running. Also ask for a 220V cable and longer lead, than at least you can use the 220V and certain campsites.

I agree, Fridges can pull down batteries very quickly. Establish a routine for Fridge switch on. It does not have to run 24/7. A few hours a day will keep it cold enough if you are not constantly opeing it and/or putting new stuff in.

Use the Cigar lighter fitting which switches off when the ignition is off.

Hire a set of Jump leads from the same place.

You do need to be aware that the fridges are generally pretty big, so a large part of your back seat will be taken up in a regular car....so you will need to pack economically!!!

Hi,

When are you planning to travel? Normally a 2x4 is ok but Dec-April it is rainy season and I would strongly recommend a 4x4. You travel mostly gravel roads and you will be so tired from driving you won't enjoy a holiday. At least go for an X-trail or similar ( not 4x4 but higher ground clearance) A lot of the hire companies got specials for Low Season so until June.

I have to agree with the posts above you will be very limited for space and watch the battery all the time. If you hire a 4x4 at Budget you can request a fridge only inside and these have dual battery systems so you don't have to worry about the fridge running or space.

Good luck,

Marie

Marie,

I don't want to get into another 4x4 v standard saloon debate but have to ask.

Do you know "Thestens " itinerary? How do you know they will be travelling "mostly on Gravel roads?". There are many many miles of perfectly good tar right up into Caprivi. Gravel is encountered mainly on by roads to certain Lodges and of course in Etosha and Damaraland. All doable in a Saloon. Personally I have never had a moments problems with 2WD (well OK, once on the road to Huab Lodge we got a bit of a slide down a hill. )

And I never felt tired ever! Not that saloons are more tiring than Chelsea Tractors.

We haven't decided on an itinerary yet, just making early enquiries, but have experience of gravel roads in NZ with 2WD and didn't have any probs. Agree that ideally a 4WD would be great - have driven to Timbuktu in our own Toyota Landcruiser with no probs at all (and a fridge), but the cost of the hire and the diesel is a big consideration. So will consider matters furthur!
