Advise for planning 10 day trip to Mozambique

Hi

We are planning on driving to Mozambique from South Africa around mid October. We have never been to Mozambique before and are looking for any advice to help us plan.

At this stage, we are thinking abut spending 3 nights in Maputo (thurs/Fri/Sat) so we can experience some of the live music that the city offers over the weekend. Then off to Xai Xai or Beline for 2 nights maybe?

From here we are not sure where else to go for another night or 2 before heading for Inhambane. Finally, we hope to get to Inhambane but are not sure where to stay. Tofo maybe?

Our interests are really the sea (snorkelling, swimming and any watersports), food and interacting with the locals.

We would like to stay in mid range accommodation and would like to know if it is necessary to pre book or just find places as we travel?

ANY advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

fh

HI

There may be the odd spot where you need 4 x 4, but generally people will help you out.

I would maybe not leave Tofu for the southern place like Guinjata for that very reason.

Our favourite place to stay in Tofu is Turtle Cove.

Not on the beach, but very good.

The first road to them is hectic, but I am sure there is a second, slightly longer route, which is better.

Maputo is cool. If you are there on Friday night, try Rangels at the Railway station, (designed by Eiffel himself, in art nouveau style.) A bit pricy but good.

The Base Backpackers is central and better than Fatima's.

Otherwise, try Terminus Hotel or Mundo's, who have 4 very simple rooms.

Look at the posters intown or newspaper for where the best music is on.

Try French cultural centre for live arts.

Costa da Sol have dance on a sunday night, preceded by lessons.

Maputo has about 300 restaurants of which 290 are good!!!!!!!!!

Vilankulos has some awesome (pricy) snorkelling at Margaruque and 2 mile.

Boa viagem

Dear travelmaniacs

Your trip sounds interesting.

My penny's worth would be to stay at Bayview Lodge in Barra (near Inhambane) www.bayviewlodgemoz.com which is accessable with a normal vehicle. You can snorkel or dive right in front of the lodge or contact Barra Reef Divers (google their website).

Barra is cheaper than the more trendy Tofo which is often frequented by more European divers.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the advise so far. MaputoJane thanks for the tips on music in Maputo. Hopefuy we will not encounter those dodgy 10 restaurants in Maputo!!!

Can anyone tell us about Bilene or Xai Xai?

Also, any suggestions on the drive back to Cape Town (an aternative to the drive in via Nelspruit).

Thanks again,

fh
