Tofo to Vilankulos

Hi there,

I will be traveling solo to Mozambique mid-August. Is it possible to book a bus from Tofo to Vilankulo in advance? Any advice gratefully received!!

Thank you!

Hi,

Getting from Tofo to Vilankulo is not an easy trip, it's a very cheap flight and you get great views of the islands so worth considering.

There used to be a shuttle service but it stopped. You can get private transfers but its about the same price to fly.

To bus there you need to bus early to Inhambane. In Inhambane catch the ferry across to Maxixe. In Maxixe you can catch any bus going north and get of at Pambarra. Pambarra to Vilankulo is only 20 minutes. There is usually more transport options in the morning so leave early so you don't get stranded.

There is no direct bus so as Oswald said you need to either get a private transfer, fly, or take the way of many changes.

We did the opposite with a friend, Vilankulos to Tofo and even though it was a long journey it wasn't too bad. We took a mini bus from Vilankulos to Maxixe, then a boat in Maxixe to Inhambane and another mini bus from Inhambane to Tofo, I guess it would be the same the other way around. It is a fun (and quite cheap) journey if you don't mind travelling local... Good luck!

Doing the opposite direction is a little bit easier as you can get a bus from Vilankulo straight to Maxixe. Its much harder to get a bus from Maxixe to Vilankulo. You usually need to get off at Pambarra and then a another open back truck into Vilankulo

Aside from the expert advice provided already I would suggest asking wherever you are staying if anyone is driving from Tofo to Maxixe (or even to Inhambane). We got lucky and got a lift thus avoiding the chapa and the ferry. Whilst walking to the bus station in Maxixe we were approached by a local who said he would take us to Vilanculos in his minivan for 4000 mets. There were only two of us so it was just a little bit expensive but if you managed to find a few others going that way it would be an option to consider. MOzwald or AraujoMatola are better placed to say whether this is normal and also whether it is safe or not.

The chapa journey from Maxixe to Vilanculos was painfully slow and look almost 5.5 hours.

Is say its safe, just agree not to pay until you arrive as lifts can sometimes cut short and people may not give refunds.

Agreed, chapa from Maxixe to Pambarra can be painful. If you can get one of the buses that does Maputo-Vilankulo (they pass at about 12-2 pm) these are better as they have less stops and they go all the way into Vilankulo
