port louis traffic

Hi,

I've read alot about there being huge amounts of traffic in and around Port Louis, what would be the best way to beat this. Driving obviously sounds like it would be manic. Is there somewhere to park that isnt as busy and then walk to Port Louis or is driving not recommended at all.

thanks

Its bad - you can try parking in Caudan and walking - thats usually best.

If you are coming in from the south its easier - you avoid PL completely, but if north you have to get through the traffic which takes around 10-20 mins depending on traffic.

Traffic is usually heavy most of the day.

We usually find Sunday the best to visit or pass through Port Louis, don't know if that's still the same, we avoid it as much as we can - Bronia maybe can advise if this is still the case.

If you are uncertain I would get a taxi into PL if there's something specific you want to see or do there. There are much nicer places to visit in Mauritius IMO.

Its only a small stretch of road but it creates a bottleneck with long hold ups, a pain if you need to pass Port Louis to go elsewhere.

I would look to park near the Cauden Waterfront.

Yes - Sunday is definitely best for least traffic. Don't think the local shops will be open then but Caudan should be.

I would be coming from the North, this might seem a silly question but would cycling be an option? Then possibly securing the bikes somewhere...more to the point would it be safe cycling?

In the capital?

No I wouldnt think so - its far too busy and the traffic fumes would be horrendous.

Its bad enough in a car as other drivers cut you up - no, its dangerous IMO.

Cycling is definitely not an option as you will be risking your life unecessarily, best option is to take the bus during week days and stroll around the capital.Leaving at 10 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m. would be be the best schedule.

Good idea Kaspi.

Theres an Express bus from Grand Baie - A/C and is quicker than the normal bus.

You would have to walk from the villa on Chemin Vingt Pieds to the nearest bus stop though :)
