Children asking for pens or "cadeau"

In some villages of Mali, the children have learned to greet visitors with requests for gifts (just like the chief!). And, like children all over the world, they are so cute, it is hard to resist The best way to handle this, I think, is to ask the children to take you to the school, and give a small donation to the school. Regardless of whether you give a gift or not, the children still enjoy walking around with you, and holding your hand.

Great suggestion to visit the schools for a gift. Children are hard to resist. I see that you used Tounga Tours in Jan. I am thinking of using them in Jan, 2009. Did they arrange a special tour for you or did you go with a group? Did you happen to go to the Festival on the Niger at that time? How did you select Tounga Tours out of so many others? How long were you in Mali?

I really can agree with this!! We were in Mali and it indeed is hard to resist! But the best way is to give a donation to the school or to learn the children to earn the gift.
