Travel to south-east and east

Hi

We're thinking of a visit to Madagascar in about 8-10 weeks, arriving in Tana, taking in Ille de St Marie, Tulear, and Fort Dauphine.

The following questions come to mind:

1) Is this feasible in three weeks?

2) How easy is it to hire a 4x4/car/motorcycle?

3) How much of the arrangements need to be made in advance, or can one do most of it once you're there?

We're not keen on the typical touristy stuf, but would like to see interesting architecture, St marie island, the Pangoline (?) canal in the east, Fort Dauphinea, desert vegetation, the boababs and of course some lemurs.

ANY suggestions and thoughts welcome.

Me and my sister just cycled (bicycle) madagascar for three weeks...

1) I am of the opinion that if you fly in madagascar you will make it but any other mode of tansport - you won't.

Here in the good old RSofA we travel 500 km in half a day. Anything, off the main road between tana and tamatave, will take you 2 - 3 days for 500 km. South africans probably does not have the driving skills I observed in madagascar so it might take you longer! Roads ara ala Angola but thankfully without landmines.

2) I only saw 4x4 rental places in tana.

3) make sure your 1st night in tana is booked and transfer from airport finalised. Flights around the country is regular but often full. Buy your tickets for flights around the country there - you get a 30% discounts if you show you Air mad international ticket. Expect delays and sometimes even flights that might leave 1 hour early!

The Baobabs and St Marie is just about at two extreme ends of the island and you will not be able to do this by car/4x4

St Marie is fairly blown out and expensive compared to the mainland.

Hi,

Hereunder, a suggest of itinerary and transport.

The south road : you need 10 or 15 days around to see the all.

The RN7 is a good road, not neccessary a 4x4.

You have many possibilities of transport :

- a private car (more expensive, the price of berline : 30 euros per day, gas not include)

- or a regular coah line of madasmiles ( 60 euros per person Tana/tulear with possibilities of many stops).

the east road takes in the mean 7-10 days :

the road is good, not neccessary a 4x4.

2 possibilities of road transport :

- a private car

- or a regular coach line (30 euros per person)

Madasmiles organize also a boat trips :

- along the canal of pangalane

- between tamatave and sainte Marie (by bus and boat)

- between tulear and Anakao

see you soon,

Nanie.

Hi,

it's correct ken, From Tuléar to Fort dauphin you need a 4x4, and it takes around 5 or 6 days. If you are interesting of the beautiful seacoast, by road is the best mean to profit your stay. But if your intention is to see especially Fort dauphin, choice the flight Tuléar/ Fort dauphin with Air Madagascar

( the cost of one way fligth Tuléar/Fort dauphin is around 125 euros per person)

(the cost of 4x4 in Tuléar is around 75 euros per day, gas not included).

Thank you to everybody who has responded to the above!

Our plan is starting to take shape and at this stage we are looking at hiring a 4x4 (@E75 a day, ouch!) in Tulear and drive to Fort Dauphine after St Marie and before flying back.

Are the guidebooks trustworthy on where to stay in Tulear and Fort Dauphine? Any suggestions?

Hi,

You can see many 4x4 to rent in Tuléar, when you arrive in your hotel, you can ask them, they have a complete information.

Unfortunately, i have not a contact, but i think it is not very difficult to see a good 4x4 when you are in Tuléar (you can control the 4x4 directly)
