In Feb 2009 our son did a tour with Gecko Tours that went from Cairo to Tunis and they would have crossed at Sollum. His travel agent, along with Gecko did all the arrangements, and our son said everything went well. It did take a long time, but he implied it was more on the Egyptian side that the delays came, and due the to long time it took, they were very hungry by the time they got through. You are probably aware that you do need to be with a Travel Company to entre Libya and they will be able to assist with the details.
We also went to Libya last year, but flew in from Tunisia and had no problems. We received our 'letter of invitation' via email about 5 days before we were due to fly and upon arrival at Tripoli airport the Customs officers were friendly and helpful. You will enjoy Libya. Small number of tourists, no sellers trying to get you to buy their goods, friendly people and amazing historical sites. Our son used the local Flight Centre and we used Harvey World Travel and they were both able to handle organising the Visa.
