Serrekunda Market an experience not to be missed!

We all know that Serrekunda is Gambia largest town and is a maze of dusty streets and badly constructed compounds the market here is busy, noisy and vibrant with colour. I've been through it many times to catch the bus to Lamin but just hated it the streets are crowded, people seem to be shoving and pushing it just wasn't a place I have ever wanted to wander around. Then a friend showed me around last year it was one culture experience which lasted 3-4 hours! I tell you food shopping with a Gambian is somewhat mind blowing so 1/2 day was more than enough for me.

Anyone got any tips for our readers where to eat or drink in a place like this?

Anyone else ever find this place a bit daunting especially getting around it all?

We went on Mosque day which I think was a Friday thankfully it seemed a little quieter than normal otherwise it would have induced a panick attack for me. Its certainly not my scene and as said you got to experience it to make a judgement but it is well worth at least one visit.

What do you love or hate about Serrekunda?

Love meandering round the market and surrounding shops but only for an hour or two. I took my daughter who is studying fashion at uni and she bought quite a lot of fabric at apparently excellent prices. She is also a better haggler than her Dad. A coffee at Lana's bar was a pleasant end to the morning.

Hi Bob

I think that I would brave it again but only to buy fabric, the fabric is so colourful and I have also been told its a good price too, but as you said you have to be a good haggler! Is Lana's bar at the beginning of the Market where the buses stop?

Hi Sunny actually going shopping with a Gambian has it ups and downs all her friends in the tourist shops wanted us to buy from them, that was only downside which felt like a little hassle. Food shopping was no hassle at all she bartered and she paid for it!

That sort of shopping could catch on here too, Sunny ... I'd love someone else to do my food shopping and get a bargain at the same time ;D
