Escape Tours, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

As a documentary travel photographer who travels to countries where English is not widely spoken, ( and where it is possible to make cultural mistakes), we rely heavily on guides who can take us to places and ensure that we capture marketable images. We worked with Girum and a driver for a month covering 3,500km and travelled throughout Ethiopia, from Addis to the Omo Valley, on to the Eastern Highlands through the centre of the country and up to the the border with Eritrea. Throughout our travels Girum proved totally capable in any situation, his knowledge of all aspects of the diverse cultures that exist in Ethiopia was superb. His love of his homeland becomes infectious and his ability to make things happen is something to behold. If you are travelling to Ethiopia, ( and we hope you do ), we strongly recommend you engage him. He is the consumate PROFESSIONAL.

A group of us traveled thru the Highlands of Ethiopia with Girum and I cannot imagine having had any other guide. He is very knowledgeable and well read. Unlike other guides we could over hear Girum really knew all about the fascinating and rich history and culture of the country. He not only showed us the great sites, but also made sure we got to know the locals in different cities. We had the perfect blend of : history, culture, outdoors, delicious food, people, and shopping. We explored- Addis, lalibela, gondar, axum, Tesfa trek, and Lake tana. I miss it already. I wish we had more time in Ethiopia so that Girum could have taken us to the best coffee farms.

With Girum you not only get a guide, but also a good friend that looks out for you.

My colleague and I had 5 days holiday and we were fortunate enough to use Escape Tour Guides based on a personal recommendation. Our guide was Yohannes Assefa. From beginning to end, everything was managed professionally and with a real passion to ensure we had a genuinely awesome experience. I have rarely been motivated to write a review on Trip Advisor so that's also a testament of how good they were. In brief: a bespoke tour was made for us that reflected our interests (historical tours + some hiking + plenty of good food) - we were also given great advice to ensure we didn't miss out on experiences we didn't initially know about; we had a door to door service - nice, comfortable accommodation was booked for us, we were escorted through the airports, picked up promptly and advised regarding food & drink. We also had time allocated to do some personal exploring and chilling - which was good and I recommend not overfilling the day as the historical sights are pretty full on for the senses and it's worth taking the time to appreciate them and read a little background in between. And the real unique selling point- Yohannes is a former History teacher in Ethiopia and was also a lecturer at the Tourism institute so he REALLY knows his stuff and brings everything to life with an enthusiasm that takes you right back in time - without making it feel like a dry school lecture (I hate dry lectures but he made it a fun adventure). Whether you're a total newbie, or a very experienced traveller, Escape Tours is well worth using if you want a professional, educational, fun and authentic experience of this amazing country delivered by people who've grown up there, studied it and do what they love to do well and genuinely get customer service. Yohannes may even throw in a dance and a radio sing along if you fancy it! Do reach out to them in advance to get advice on weather, suitable gear - esp. if you want to hike, major festivals you might be able to attend and any personal preferences - you'll find them very responsive and the kind if guys you'll want to be friends with. Highly recommended.

We have just got back from an amazing 3 week holiday travelling via the west bank of the Omo river from Addis to Nairobi. We were lucky to have Girum Worku as our guide who always went the extra mile to help us experience the "real" Ethiopia. We saw no other tourists for days and he had immense enthusiasm for looking after us and attending to our needs.

Thank you for a great holiday.

I have been traveling Ethiopia north and south twice with Yohannes along with some friends. He is not only a very skilled and warm-hearted tour guide. Having studied history he knows literally everything about his wonderful country, history, religion, politics and traditions. Yohannes reads his customers' eyes and has a good sense of humor keeping his guests in good mood at all times. And he knows all the good spots for having a nice coffee, dinner or amusement.

Try!

Girum was the perfect choice for us: experienced, energetic, client-oriented, polite, knowledgeable, intelligent, humorous, entertaining. He was very responsive to our wishes and was always very friendly. He also left us the room busy people like us look for when being on holiday. His knowledge is overwhelming and we loved to discuss all possible subjects with him.
