A Bad Tourism Activity In Omo Valley Region

Hello all this forum's members, my name is "Garresu Shakane" from the

Southern Ethiopia and i work in Omo valley for a governmental

organization on the region. Hey today i happen to write you

this in order to share and expose what i saw/learnt a wrong and unfair

tourism activities that had been tried by one tourist in some of the

omo valley village where i live and work, that had happened almost

on December of last year. And even though I been thinking to share

This bad experiences to others but I didn’t know how and where to post

But now when I come to Addis for different reason, some people told me as I could

Register, be a member and then to post on this and other forums, so here is all the story.

Dear forum members and anyone who are reading this messages, even

though i am not working in the tourism sector or industry but in those

small villages there are a lot of tourists coming to visit their

beautiful cultures and mostly i have seen so many good tourists who

really love and respect all of the different tribal groups with their

un touched ancient cultures.

But before two months i had seen a very bad thing tried by one

tourist called Mr. JAMES STEWART, who came to visit with his own guide

and driver. I found them in Turmi while he was arguing and fighting

with his guide and then while i was investigating to know about their

problems why they were arguing each other, why they were arguing *

each other, i finally learnt as this person

called Mr. James Stewart were sending his guide to call a young and

beautiful women’s for a picture and then he had been forcing

his guide to bring one of the young girl from the tribes to his hotel room

just for his sexual interests even by trying to convince them to offer

paying her some more extra money on top of the photographing fees, but

his guide was un willing and refusing to do that. Then after by the

night me and my friends have found his guide and asked him to explain

us about the problem on his client and even about the fact what his

client Mr. James were trying to do? So that he told and explained us, as

his client Mr. James were a strange tourist asking him to bring a young

women from a

different villages where they been travelling and staying even in 3 or

4 of the previous villages, just for his sexual interests, and he

said when he explained about the different cultures, as that was un

fair (in appropriate), and when he refused to do that then he always

dissagreed as well as

complaining on him, so that with a very heart touching words he had

explained us as that were the main reasons why his client Mr. James

were complaining and fighting with him.

Therefore we had reported the situation to the Police station as well

as to the concerned body, and then even though we planned and decided

to meet and discus with this man Mr. James (the tourist) on the next

day, but we didn't find him because he had forced his guide and driver

to cancel their plan and to drive to Arbaminch, with out completing

their last day Hammer village's trip at Turmi or Dimmeka.*

Therefore even though that was un usual experience and even though

most of the other tourists do not usually have such a bad habits of

doing such un fair and bad thing but as it could be a disaster or a

main factor to spoil the culture of the Omo valley tribes, please I highly would like to advise other travelers not to do like Mr. James Stewart and even if you see someone doing

Some thing bad like Mr. James then please try to report to the near by police station.

May be if Mr James by him self are reading this then please don’t try to do the same mistake

On other African countries, specially on a little tribal villages and don’t spoil others good habit.

For more information you can contact me and our friends who been checking this case with me

When it was happening.
