What Would You Do? (Driver & Fuel)

Hi all,

We received this quote from a driver with whom we would love to book for our week-long trip to Ethiopia. We are a party of four. However, there is a huge discrepancy between the "with fuel" price and the "without fuel" price.

As we've never traveled to Ethiopia before, I don't know which is wiser to go with. We are traveling from Addis to Bahir Dar, which is a lot of driving, but then will be hiking in the Simiens for 4 days, so won't be driving at all. Please advise. The quote from his email is below:

"my price per day is $ 90 + fuel or $ 140 including fuel"

Which would you go with? Is it a headache to calculate fuel with the driver if you go with option a? Further, is $90 a day even a good price for a driver?

Thanks in advance!

you better use the car with out petrol as you are not using it on Trekking for 2-3 days

but do you know you can trek by the jeep up to Chenek?? camp site?? and the jeep collects you when you come back from the mountain

90 may be Good price but check the quality of the car, model, how much liter their car consue per Killo meter etc

see you

No question....WITHOUT fuel. We have just done a similar sort of trip, possibly more intensive, (Bahir, Gonder, Simien Axum, Gheralta, Lalibela) ie more driving per day, and again had $50 per day difference. Our fuel costs (18 birr = 1$ a litre) were less than 30$, maybe 23 ish per day. SIMIEN Mountains....where are you going to stay....and maybe more important, where is your driver going to stay?

We flew ex ADD to Bahir and from Lalibela to ADD...about 70$ each way purchased thru Ethio Travel and Tours...who also provided us with a 2011 Land Cruiser for 110$/160$

We aren't sure about lodging yet. Our per day price includes our driver's per diem, so I assumed he has his own plans as far as lodging is concerned? We were thinking of camping for three nights or so, and then staying in lodging in the area. Do you recommend anything?
