Soyo - to go or not to go....

Hello: My husband is considering a job opportunity with a construction company in Soyo. We have been unable to find much informaiton about that area of the country. Specifically: quality of housing outside of Kwanda Base, facilities i.e. markets, hospitals, etc., entertainment options, safety, etc. Also, assuming I have a work permit, what employment opportunities are there for a non-technical female with a business background and who peaks English, Spanish, French and some Portuguese?

Any info is appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Bianca:

So far, the only info I have found is that the town is in the midst of a major construction boom and that everything is very expensive. Apparently housing inside the base is not conducive to couple since they are dormitory style.

My email is jotici@bellsouth.net. Drop me a note and that way I can keep you updated on what I find.

I have not seen Sonangols accomodation area, but most of the places i have seen outside the base are not great.

The studio apartments on the base are ok comparedt to european stds and great compared to what around in angola.

There is nothing to really do in soyo. the base has tennis, squash courts and the gym is no place for a lady!

The hotel has a nice bar and drinks are reasonable. Outside the base crime is low, you do not need a driver or escort, the time u may find trouble is if u stumble out the local disco blind drunk at 3am. The local disco is no place for a foreign lady anyway. Work wise u will need a visa to work, most pa positions are given to angolans due to governments policy of training locals etc, It is not impossible to get work however, you just need to network and it will take a while.

Take care and all the best

i have been to soyo for one year, and im going back next week.

soyo is a city that stoped in time is just like MACONDO In GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUES one hundred years of solitude. there is nothing to do and no place to go. its a town with no proper cafés bars shops whatsoever the people are nice and calm and they old no hostility against foreighn people.

there is alot of work once moust people old 10 hours a day work contract.

if you know how to lieve in soyo you will find it lovely in first month´s but after you´ll get fedup cause besides the incredible nature, there is nothing to do .

ps. its safe to lieve in soyo but you need to watch your back . things seems to insist to desapear

Hi were are you from Miami ?

My name is Ana Rebelo , i am portuguese and my husband is at soyo at the moment.

According to what he tells me , there´s nothing yet at soyo , but it`s growing because is got a lot of potencial and the petrol is there .

Sorry if my english is not that good but i hope that`s enough .

Soyo is got a clinic , i think there`s no hospital , only one clinic .

I think they`ve got one school there .

One resort with small houses in wood , something like an hotel , with swimimg pool , restaurant and swimimg pool bar .

Only one main road , is the airport avenue .

My husband is there at the moment , and i`m thinking into go there to stay for a few months but i`m olso don`t know what to do .

Outside of kwanda base there`s no entertainment options , my husband says that is quite safe , he never had problems .

He also said to me that there are business opportunities there , theres no shops , supermarkets , coffe-shops , boutiques , hairdresses , there`s nothing there !

Go to net , google , and write " Saber viver " it`s a Magazine from Angola , you can find there some information of angola and also Soyo .

Good luke

Ana Rebelo
