victoria falls water volume

can you advise me what the water volume over the falls is likely to be at the beginning of July. I have heard reports of a mere trickle! Also can you advise me on the state of the roads between Harare & Eastern Highlands, Eastern Highlands & Great Zimbabwe, Great Zimbabwe & Matopo Hills, Matopo Hills and Hwange, and finally Hawange and Victoria Falls. A former Zimbabwe resident says the roads are full of pot holes and stopping can lead to crime.

Lastly are car hire firms reliable.

July is still high water meaning there will still be a lot of water. Only in October / November does the water flow reduce to a trickle and even then that is only on the Zambian side of the Falls. The Zimbabwean side has a good volume of water all year round.

On all the road routes you mention the roads are in good condition and easily driveable without stopping, that's not to say you won't see a pothole but the major roads are generally in good condition. Bad potholes are mainly in the town centers and minor roads.

We were there in August & the water volume was still great.

We certainly had spray on us doing the walk opposite but we weren't too wet & our Guide told us this was the best time to view the falls.

The water levels fluctuate from year to year, but usually early July is still high water, and the spray can actually affect visibility, making it difficult to see the falls. It will definitely not be down to a trickle in July yet, and certainly not on the Zimbabwe side (only the Zambian side dries up during September to November).

The benefit of the low water season on the Zambian side is that you can visit Livingstone Island and swim in Devil's pool, one of the best ways to experience Vic Falls!

As per previous post water leves over the fall is July will be spectacular. I did the exact route that you are asking about around Zimbabwe. Harare to Inyanga roads are in good order, in fact be prepared to encounter some road works, but all are well controlled and sign posted. Major one was the entrance to Mutare but imagine those would be finished by now. Mutare to to Vic Falls no major road works, roads are in good order and doing 120km no problem. Always be aware of cattle, goats and donkies along with wildlife on the roads, especially in the more remote area's. Be preared for a number of ploice road blocks, but they are generally always friendly and polite, crime definitely not an issue on Zimbabwe roads. Fill up with fuel in the major towns: Harare, Mutare, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Hwange . Car Hire no problem in Zimbabwe, with the major firms represented being Avis and Hertz. Your planned route will give you some of the most varied and spectacular tourist destinations in Zimbabwe. Have a great trip
