victoria falls in october

I am looking at going to Victoria Falls in October. What is the cheapest way to get there and how long will it take? Are there any buses going there? Is there anywhere I can find a reasonably priced flight? I will be traveling from Johannesburg.

Thank you!

Hi there

The cheapest way to get from JHB to Vic Falls will be by bus, but it is a long and slow journey. Long delays at the border post (6Hrs +) are common. Greyhound service from JHB to Bulawayo then change to Pathfinder for Byo to VF. This will take over 24hrs - not unpleasant except for the border post crossing which is highly unpleasant..

Flights take 1hr 40 minutes - Cheap flights are unfortunately not an option. There are only two airlines at the moment who operate this route directly and that is Britsh Airways (also called Kulula) and South African Airways. Air Zimbabwe are talking about opening up a flight soon but we wait with entrepidation.

You can either fly into Livingstone in Zambia, these flights are noramlly slightly cheaper, but if you are going to stay in Zimbabwe then you have to factor in the cost of extra visas, yellow fever vaccination, transfers and time. If you stay in Zambia only, you will not be seeing the best of the Falls, The Zambian side in October is pretty much dried up, yet on the Zimbabwean side the falls are still flowing.

Flights directly into Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe are generally more expensive, again only these two airlines operate a single flight daily.

Sorry but there is no shortcut here, the flights are not cheap especially around peak season. My advice would be to go onto a flight comparison website and see what is available, for example victoriafalls-guide.net/travel-start.html. Monitor this for a few weeks and see if the prices fluctuate which they normally do depenant on availability. Once you have compared the various flights available you can then try the airlines website directly which are normally a few $ cheaper.

Best wishes

Tony

Thank you Tony!

Is october a good time to go if we are staying on Zimbabwean side? I don't want to make the expensive trip to the falls if they aren't going to be beautiful!

Thank you,

Amanda
