American money

Can you get American money from the atm's in Zimbabwe and Zambia? If yes, does anyone know the average daily limit?

The US$ is the de-facto currency of Zim, so that is what you get from an atm. SA Rand and Botswana Pula are also used as cash.

In Zambia the currency is the Zambian Kwacha, and that is what you will get from an atm Limits?, Zim around $300 US, Zambia don’t know, may be less equivalent value, as there are a LOT of kwacha to the $. Note that there often seems to be a (convenient) shortage of small denominations in Zim so you need to take a good few 1$ and low denomination bills, otherwise you will have a problem getting change. Note also that you need to ensure that you don’t end up with a lot of kwacha when you leave Zam, as you may find it almost impossible to change once out of the country, other than near the border.

Mr. Ivan,

Thanks for your tips. I wasn't aware that the de facto Zimbabwe currency is the US$.

Other than entry visas at the Zimbabwe and Zambian borders, what else should I bring US$ for? Is it typical to tip tour guides with US$?

Barclays Victoria Falls ATM US$500 per day per card. Just off Livingston Way, first left after railway line, you will see Post Office, Air Zimbabwe, Barclays, Standard Chartered Ect. Most small curio shops/curio market don't have visa facilities, but bigger hotels/booking agents do. Take small denom to pay for taxis/porters/tips and drinks when wandering around town.
