Self-drive Zimbabwe

Hi,

we would like to hire a fully equipped camping 4x4 vehicle (either in Zimbabwe or S.A.) and basically wing-it, in Zimbabwe.

Does anyone know if this is possible? What I mean is, to drive to various parks, Mana Pools, Hwange, Karibe, etc without prior lodging booked. We are happy to stay the night in the very basic but wild, campsites with no facilities. This way we are not bound by an itinerary and can keep flexible. We did this in Kenya many years ago and are quite comfortable with this arrangement.

Any advice?

Also, do maps exist that show the National Parks with camp sites on them?

Thank you

Hi,

we found www.drivesouthafrica.co.za and tried it. It's more like an agent, our car was owned and provided from Bushlore (in ZA).

we would strongly recommend not to go without two batteries, two tanks and two spares. Plus plugs for tire repair. The acacia trees ...

Check all the tools! Our wrench didn't fit the nuts.

In case you want to receive the a car in ZIM, it is possible. We do not recommend this. If the car is brought in from any other country by a third person, this person has to stay in ZIM as long as the car does, otherwise the person has to pay import tax. No problem so far, if you are bringing the car into ZIM yourself. Your name will be on a very important piece of paper, the temporary import permit, and you will pass the countless (this is not an exaggeration) police stops without problems. In case the car is brought into ZIM by an agent of the rental company, its his name on the TIP, not yours. It is still not a problem, as long the police officer is inclined to believe you, the guy who brought the car in, is still in ZIM. In case he doesn't believe you, you are in trouble ... believe us.

Next time we would bring in our car ourselves via Botsuana, but there is much more on the net, which border crossing is hassle free ;-)).

We used a www.tracks4africa.co.za map on basecamp and our garmin. Map is accurate and very useful for the public roads and the tracks in the parks. There are many campsites located as well, but no informations on facilities, fees, booking modalities ... We didn't use camp sites, so we can't recommend.

You didn't ask, but: fuel still isn't available everywhere anytime.

Have fun!

The actual driving part is easy and perfectly safe, but I would not recommend winging it without bookings, the parks are pretty remote and while the warden may be sympathetic for one night, it's really not worth going hundreds of kms to find out that you can spend the night only and then have to move on. Depending on time of year, the parks can get very busy. Plan your holiday around the parks and wing the days in between.

Maps are scarce so yes, tracks for africa are good but otherwise there is a co in South Africa that that produce a good map but I will only be able to give you the contact details in about a weeks time (am travelling)
