Novice safari traveller questions( only been to Kruger)

I have been monitoring this forum for months and most of my questions has been answered. There are, however a few things where the experts can assist:

1. Is the Serengeti safari doable from west, starting from Mwanza, ending in Arusha?

How long drive to central Serengeti, how are the road conditions?

Are there OP's operating from Mwanza, or is the vehicle/guide sent from Arusha on my account?

2. If booking private safari, which vehicle/guide is used when staying in camps/lodges, my private one or the one arranged by camp/lodge.

3. and then specific question on luggage: are medium size hard-sided suitcases at all possible on private safari, including possible light aircarft flights (we are on a longer tour and duffle bags not preferred)

The plan is to do this in Nov/Dec 2012

many thanks in advance

I'll try to take them in the order which you presented them.

1) You can begin in Mwanza and some do. Most begin in Arusha. You can also go to Arusha and fly to the Serengeti. If the safari operator has a branch in Mwanza then they would begin from there, if not then they would drive from Arusha to meet you. There's a lot of "it's all according" in all of this.

2) You safari operator will provide you with an all inclusive safari, including vehicle, driver/guide, etc. So you would use the guide which is provided by the safari company, your driver also. The drive to the central Serengeti is according to whether you are going there from Mwanza or Arusha. From Arusha it's a very long drive, perhaps 6 - 8 hours. From Mwanza it is a shorter drive, about half that. And all this depends on how much gameviewing you do on the way.

3) You can bring along any kind of luggage you wish. If it's too large for the safari aircraft they will leave it behind and bring it later. Duffle bags tend to be able to fit in a lot of spaces which a hard sided doesn't. In the vehicle it shouldn't make any difference all that much. The only place where you might have a problem is on a small plane.

As Karl but to restate that there are several very competent Safari Agents operating out of Mwanza. No need to deal with Arusha if it is not convenient.

But do please be aware that whichever way you do this the car will be empty on one of the legs. either back to Mwanza from Arusha or up to Mwanza from Arusha.

let me add a few comments.

1. the safari is doable and many start at Mwanza or lake Victoria. Some will combine it with some activities around the lake ie a canoe trip or fishing village trip. From Mwanza to the Serengeti gate is about 2 hours on a tarmac road and then add on 3 hours to Seronera this will be game viewing enroute. There are op's operating from Mwanza but others will send the vehicle on your account.

2. At most camps and lodges you will use the vehicle and guide provided by your operator. At some of the camps like @beyond you have the option of the camp guide and vehicle usually shared.

3. Depending on your internal flights -if any there can be luggage restrictions, manily weight.
