restaurants in downtown Dar es Salaam

We have about 7 hours between flights in DAR. Our tour company has suggested that they can order a car to take us down town to have dinner at a hotel. The cost for the car is $40. Is that a fair price?

Can anyone recommend several good places for an early dinner around 7 p.m.

How far is the airport from downtown? We have a flight to Amsterdan at 10:55 p.m. Don't want to miss that.

Is traffic heavy in Down town DAR?

Thanks

May43...Dar is a city of about 3 million people, with the traffic that brings. In the morning and late afternoon there are traffic jams on the major roads. The time it takes to get from the airport to the center of the city is about 30 - 60 minutes according to the traffic flow.

Cost for a taxi from the airport is $20, same for the return. So if the safari company car is both ways then that's about right; if it's one way you can do better walking outside the airport terminal and getting a taxi from those lined up. They are always there.

As for restaurants, I would get the dinner earlier then 7pm to make certain that you get back in time for your flight. Restaurants are sometimes slow. There are many good restaurants in Dar according to your tastes. For the best in Chinese food try the Chinese restaurant on Jamhuri Street near Morogoro Road (my favorite). For Indian and chinese foods try the Alcove on Samora Street in downtown Dar. For really great food of all kinds try the Sweet N Easy at the end of the Oyster Bay Shopping Center on the Ocean Road in Oyster Bay. For a quick lunch/dinner try the Florida Bar behind the UN Development Center building on Somara. For a light snack in a pleasant atmosphere try the Sports bar in the New Africa Hotel on Sokoine near the Askari monument, they have a casino beside the sports bar and also a buffet dinner in the evening.

There are many more but this will give you a good choice of places to go.

Give yourself plenty of time to return to the airport, but not too much time as there's little to do in the airport. You will need to check in at the front desks when they begin to check in your flights (they won't let you in until they begin) then go through passport control, then into a typically hot waiting terminal. There are a few shops there and a small restaurant in that area, but little else.

Thank you very much for your good advice. I will certainly take into consideration the time it takes for one to get from and to the airport.

Our flight with KLM leaves at 10:55 p.m. I would love to try the Chinese Restaurant you mentioned.

I would greatly appreciate your help in planning what time I should arrive at the place for dinner and what time (latest) I should leave for the airport since I still have to check in.

Are there lockers (that can be locked) in the airport for us to store our luggage when we leave for dinner?

thanks again. I am finally going for the safari from August 25 - Sept. 6 with a 3 night safari at Selous. I used Basecamp and I am very happy with Achmed's help and patience.

At that time of the night there won't be a lot of traffic so you won't have any difficulty getting to the airport. If you left the restaurant at 8:00pm that would give you plenty of time to return.

I don't know of anywhere in the airport where you could leave your luggage and have it secured. Perhaps Achmed could help you with this problem.

The name of the Chinese Restaurant on Jamhuri Street is Tai Huo San Zhuang Restaurant. If you take a taxi there ask them to return and pick you up for a return to the airport at a specific time, they will be there. You could also tell Shirley (the owner) that you need to be finished eating by a certain time in order to return to the airport and she will do her best to accommodate you. Everything on the menu is wonderful, the soups are delicious and too large.

Good luck,
