Recommended local Tanzanian safari company??

Hello!

My husband and I are planning a trip to Tanzania in July 2013. We are looking to book a 4 day safari during our trip. We would like to include the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire.

We are hoping to find recommendations for local Tanzanian tour companies/guides as opposed to tour operators that are based outside the country and then subcontract the trips.

We still have not decided if we plan to camp or use a lodge - so all advice is welcomed. Thank you!

Laura

I will chime in and share we were delighted with the two week safari with Good Earth Tours - good communication during the planning process, perfectly executed safari with our outstanding guide, and all accommodations met or exceeded our expectations. Good Earth Tours was great!

“ Looking for a list of Safari Companies. ”

May 03, 2012, 12:10 AM

I thought I would compile a new list of Tanzania Safari Operators for ease of reference. The list in the top right hand corner is muddled by references to Naipenda etc etc which can be confusing and is somewhat old.

I have complied list of operators known from my personal knowledge most of them well and they are of long standing.

It is a good starting point for a safari to Tanzania if you want a local company but I did mention a few others.

I stress it is only a starting point and others should add companies of their choice.I am not trying to be the expert on safari companies and my "suggestions" should be taken as that "suggestions"

Those looking for an upmarket higher end safari try the South African based company.

@Beyond - previously CCAfrica will provide an excellent up market (costly to some) safari. They prefer there own lodges and camps but will book you into others as well.

For a middle of the road safari, with a long standing operators (more than 20 years) - The owners living in Arusha -some do have overseas connections however try these. Each in there own way offer different types of trip to suit most budgets- camping or lodge luxury or mid range even budget. They all cater to families and specialise in private tours.

Roy Safari - roysafaris@intafrica.com

East African Safari and Touring Company -simon@eastafricansafari.info

Hoopoe Adventure Tours - information@hoopoe.com -with offices in the US, Europe and Kenya.

Sunny Safaris- sunny@arusha.com - Will also do very good budget camping trips.

Swala Safaris -swala@habari.co.tz

Shidolya -shidolya@habari.co.tz

Warrior Trails -info@warriortrails.com

For a Specialist Camping Safari operator you can't beat Basecamp.

A local based Tz company with the owner living in Arusha - Base Camp Tanzania has an excellent reputation for camping trips of moderate cost -www.basecamptanzania.com

For safari companies also middle of the road price wise but with offices in the US or elsewhere- you should try these 2

Access2 Tanzania -stella@access2tanzania.com

Good Earth Tours-juliet@goodearthtours.com

Both the companies get very good reviews on trip advisor and will offer a competitive quote.

For safari companies that are new which I have only heard of and read about on trip advisor but worth a contact would be-

Safari Infinity-info@safari-infinity.com

Calabash Adventures-info@calabashadventures.com

If you are looking for a guide book

There are my favourites -others have their own

Bradt Guide

Rough Guide

Lonely Planet -not recommended.

There are lodges and camps on the Safari circuit owned by hunting companies I will never recommened these - to me a conflict of interest.

There are other companies while professing to be community minded are the complete opposite I will not recommened them nor will other regular posters I know.

These companies can be gleaned by a bit of research.

All the ones I mention don't fit in this catergory.

Feel free to add you own choices.

Now if you don't like that list I posted in May 2012 you can try and find a few operators from this list:-

Thanks NE, I have always thought this list is a good starting place for anyone beginning there search. It gives a good range of companies.

Lens - We have done 4 safaris (5th planned for April). So I am hardly an expert but I have been through this process a few times so will add a few comments. I have always found that to get the best out of any TO you need to do your research so you can work with your TO to plan the best trip for you. Good communication with your TO is key to a good trip. So buy a good guide book or 2, read plenty of posts of this forum and others and just get an idea of what is on offer and what might suit you. There are so many options with regard to itineraries, location and standard of accomodation for basic camping to super luxury lodges, loads of additional activities from cultural visits like schools and village visits, easy walks to full day hikes, balloon rides etc. So get an idea of what you want to do, the standard of accomodation you would like etc and get an idea of the sort of questions you need to ask your TO to get the best trip for you. Then once you have done this contact a selection of TO's to get their thoughts on your trip and the prices. You will find that you will then start to get a feel for which TO best suits you. Then ask further questions about the company, guides, vehicles etc, take up references from previous clients and finalise your trip :-)

We chose Swala safaris for our last trip and were very very pleased we did. We had a great trip and a great guide at a good price. We are using them again in April. However others will have their favourites. In reality many people only have the experience of one trip and are generally very happy with it but there again don't have anything to compare it to. So do your own research and have great trip. Have fun planning

We used Swala Safaris in Nov 2012 for 7 days private safari Tarangire-Ngorongoro-Serengeti. Followed the advise from experts here we contacted 6 local operators from noexperts list. Having read a lot of rewievs and guide books we knew pretty well what we wanted, even named the lodges/camps where we wanted to stay.

Swala (Rose) came quickly back and and gave the most economical package exactly as we wanted, also including pick-up from JRO and one night in Arusha.

We wired them 35% upon booking, 30% two months before safari and balance cash on arrival. They confirmed receipt of funds within 3-4 days from sending.

The vechicle was a Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, not the latest model, but reliable with zero issues during safari.

Our guide was Felix, I cannot recommend enough, very nice guy, with a lot of knowledge of animals (especially birds) and landscape, always in time, and gentle driver.

I think Swala is rather small operation, 6 cars/guides

We had a fantastic safari with them and would not hesitate to go with them again..

Thank you very much for all the helpful suggestions. It is great to have a starting off point for research when there are so many options out there.

I will definitely take the list that noexpert posted and use that as my starting point - especially since all of the other recommended companies are on that list as well!

Much appreciated!

I also found it helpful to go to different companies websites and read their comments about the different accommodation in selecting where to stay. African Dream Safaris has detailed information about each of the accommodations they contract with. Africa Travel Resources has great pictures and information about prices. (Know that they may or may not be the prices your TO will pay, but helps to know prices relative to each other.)

Expert Africa offers opinions and ratings of different accommodations.

But first you need to figure out which parks you want to visit and what time of year before you select accommodations.
