All Denominations are accepted but you will get a better rate when changing with the bigger notes.

Any note should really be newer than 2004 and this may change to 2006 shortly.

Whatever the age, scrumpled, torn and taped notes or those written on will be rejected.

I just return from Tanzania. I was told to change my money to shillings, but I found that to not be necessary. Every bar tab I got at the tented camps and lodges was in US dollars, and they wanted payment in US dollars. Gift shops and many restaurants also wanted dollars.

But the dollars do need to be 2004 or 2006 mint, and in good condition. I found $1 very good for tipping. I ironed the money with a steam iron and kept it in a cardboard envelope. US money cleans up very nicely when ironed.

For shillings, I used the ATM. There are Barclays in several places, including the airport, and the big banks all take the VISA/Plus ATM cards. Be warned there is only one working ATM in Stone Town, Zanzibar and it ALWAYS has a 10 to 15 minute line in front of it.

""money cleans up very nicely when ironed.""

A new slant on "Money laundering??"

thanks for the smile.

I also agree regarding the Bar bills in Lodges although they will take TZsch too. at a 'convenient' 1000TS/$.

Steam ironing is great for all the "linen" in our USD notes! :) :)

There is a hotel in San Francisco, the St. Francis on Nob Hill, which cleans and presses all it's money every day; and it also irons the newspapers to set the ink. Of course it's one of the most expensive hotels to stay at in Frisco. It's done this for years, don't know if they still do this or not, but I would guess that they do.

If I pay in US$ at a gift shop or bar, will my change be in US$?

No. It will be in TZSh. Unless you ask before you buy!

I got both kinds of change. In fact at one camp I paid my bar bill in shillings and got USD back.
