Just bring your normal Credit Card - Visa and MC (to a lesser extent AE and Diners) are acceptable at virtually all restaurants, hotels, stores etc. Then for the much smaller amount of day-to-day cash you might need, just bring your normal bank ATM Debit Card. ATMs are also everywhere - even in small towns. High street banks, shopping malls, airports and major petrol stations. Draw cash every few days as you need it 24/7.

The exchange rate that you get from your own bank through an ATM is nearly always better than changing cash in a local bank or exchange office and you do not need to bring and carry significant amounts of cash around with you - which can be lost, mislaid or stolen. Local banks charge nothing for this service. The only charges are from your own bank. Travellers cheques are never used in South Africa and you would need to queue up in a bank to get them changed into Rand - at the same exchange rate, which again is worse than from an ATM.
