Yes, this is the garden route. Have driven it twice and it's wonderful. A good itinery would be drive from Cape Town to PE via garden route and then when you return to Cape Town drive via the Karoo Desert - another wonderful route. You can visit Oudtshoorn on the way and the Montagu Springs. This route should be in all the guidebooks or buy this month's Sunday Times Travel magazine as they have just had a full write up on South Africa and both these trips.

There are many places to stop on the garden route, a night here and there. Knysna, Victoria Bay, Jeffreys Bay are all great. A safari at PE is a must - try Shamwari.

The Garden Route is one of the most popular routes/destinations in South Africa.

There are many charming towns to be explored and I agree with the previous poster to drive along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth and take the inland R62 back which gives you complete different impressions than the coastal route.

Many people end their Garden Route trip with a visit to Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth. Shamwari, as mentioned by the previous poster, is also not far from PE. So you could either visit both (depending on how many days you have) or choose from one of them.

:)
