Lost kids' birth certificates while travelling in SA

We managed to lose the bag with our kids' birth certificates after entering South Africa. Do we require them also for leaving the country?? We do have all of our passports. We are Germans so we received our entry stamps without prior visa.

Any advice on what authority to contact to clarify this??

Yes, you need the birth certificates for leaving SA. I suggest you contact your German embassy as a matter of urgency.

Yeah, that's what I feared. We have three days until we leave the country...

We actually have scanned copies of the birth certificates but I suppose that won't help us either??

The scanned copies would need to be certified as copies of the originals.

I really recommend getting in touch with your embassy for advice.

Actually you don't need to carry original birth certificates with you. Photocopy of birth certificates attested by Notary is good enough. Best way is to ask for your embassy's help. If that does not work, see if you find a Notary who is ready to trust you and attest a copy of the birth certificate without seeing the original.

Update from Capetown airport: We figured that we would just print out the scanned copies of the birth certificates we had after the embassy told us they can't help and we would have to have originals sent from Germany. At check in we were asked to show the birth certificates and no one batted an eyelid when we showed the copies. At passport control they didn't even ask to see them. All good!
