car hire in Morocco

My wife and I, and 24-year-old son are going to Marrakech, Ouirgane (in the Atlas Mountains south of Marrakech), and Essaouira for 9 days in late October. We are wondering whether or not to rent a vehicle. I don't particularly want to use a 4-wheel drive and am a bit concerned about the safety of driving. On the other hand I have many years' experience driving in Mexico City and other parts of Mexico! How easy is it to get around without your own transport ? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't think you will need a car for that trip at all, Marrakech is best visited without a car, and even if you want to discover the new city around the Medina, Menara gerdens, the palm gardens.....you can always charter a pro cab driver to do that for you much cheeper than renting a car, more convenient and hassle free.

To Ouirgan, you can charter a grand taxi to drop you off, the same thing back.

To Essaouira, Supratour buses in the train station are the best way to get to Essaouira and back ( 65.00MDH each, comfortable, airconditioned and it's less than 3 hours ride) Further more, you will not need a car in Essaouira at all.
