Buyer Beware!

We have just got back from a fantastic week in Marrakech, staying at the Riu Tikida Garden hotel, courtesy of Thomson Holidays. Only one slight downer, we were ripped off on two rugs that we bought from a shop next to the hotel.

The guys in the shop appeared friendly and when we showed interest in the rugs at the back of the store, the traditional bartering began. It was dimly lit, yet the rugs looked ok. We got them down to much less than the asking price and we thought we had a bargain. Upon paying with my debit card, I was informed that there would be a 400 Dhiram commission. I agreed but only to find later that the bank did not charge a commission fee! The rugs were being wrapped at this time, ready for our trip home. Upon unwrapping them back home, we discovered that one was badly stained and the other half faded from where it had been hung over a line or wall at some time. Not what we had paid for!!! So be aware of the gift shop next to the spice shop to the left of the entrance to the hotel. The guy is a crook. There you go Ali. Your Trip Advisor review as requested.

If I understand correctly, the shop is outside of the hotel grounds therefore the hotel management have no control over the shop owners.

Yes, the phrase "next to hotel" is somewhat ambiguous".

Hi,

It's a good tip for anyone buying a rug or carpet to insist on seeing it in daylight outside the shop before agreeing to make a purchase.

and to stay with the carpet while it is wrapped.

there are, among carpet sellers, a lot of versions of the 'switch the box' con. once you have paid for an item, keep your eye, and your hand, on it.

Yes indeed ,Pam

If one is purchasing gifts abroad make sure its the gift you bought that is being wrapped

One "con" ..

The shopkeeper nicely asks you if you would like it gift wrapped ..

Then disappears to the rear of the shop returning with a parcel nicely tied up with bows!

Knowing you (or the recipient of the gift) are not likely to open it till you get home.

A similar con with electrical goods, cameras etc.is not too uncommon in some Spanish resorts)

Sorry you didn't receive the goods you thought you had bought.

You however did not hold the hotel responsible and you did specifically indicate where this shop is situated in relation to the hotel.

That's good information for others who visit this hotel and likely to visit the shop in question .

Forewarned is forearmed,as the saying goes.....

Kind Regards

Mick

I would just like to state, for the record, that the Hotel Riu Tikida Garden, were in no way responsible for our experience & was one of the best hotels that we have ever stayed in! In fact, we are soon off to Fuertaventura, to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday & on the back of our experience at that hotel, we will be staying at another Riu resort.

When in Marrakech, just be on your guard for the odd rogue trader & don't let them spoil your experience of this amazing city / country.
