Marrakech in Winter for trekking?

My husband and I are preparing to be 8 days in Marrakesh (1 Jan - 9 Jan 2006)

We like walking but we dont know if January (Winter) can stop us to walk the skirts of the Atlas? Do we have other walks?

What about the desert? Can we do that in Winter? Does it make sense. In general I'd like to share the atmosphere of the city and do some walks around.

There's no way to predict the weather in January. Years can go by without any substantial rain or snow, but in some years entire villages are isolated by heavy snow.

The desert gets very cold at night in January. If snow blocks access to the mountains, you can't reach the desert from Marrakech.

But under normal circumstances, both a walk in the mountains and a trip to the desert should be viable.
