What not to miss in Fes with 4 nights (3 full days)

Hi everybody,

Well, the title says it all. Actually, I'll have 2.5 full days in Fes because I'll use half a day to day trip to Volubilis.

Thanks.

If your visit is going to coincide with a Friday try to make that day your visit to Volubilis as most things in the medina will be closed. Aside from that there's no real secret about what to see in the Fes medina, all the guidebooks list more or less the same things and most religious monuments are off-limits to non-muslims. The medresa Bou Inania is a must, as is the Musée Batha and the Fundouk Nejjarine. The Chouara tanneries are the most impressive (and most photographed) in the medina. You can pick up "Fes from Bab to Bab" for 150 dirhams from most kioks and it has good explanations of major and minor sites. ADER (green cover) also has an excellent guidebook with walking tours, you can see signs for these different thematic medina-walks as you are wandering around and it is ADER which has put up the helpful "you are here" type maps and explanations of monuments.

Hi,

Thanks for the input. Are there tour operators that offer excursions to Volubilis from Fes?

Is Friday closing day in Fes or in all cities in Morocco?

Thanks.

You can take a grand taxi from Fes (taxis leave from Boujeloud bus station just outside the medina) to the ruins (Walili in Arabic) and then once on site hire a personal guide to take you around (expect to pay about 100 dirhams though you could bargain for less). The grand taxi is also negotiable but you can get one for as little as 300 dirhams....ask at the place where you are staying if they would arrange it for you and for how much. Most grand taxi drivers will then take you into Meknes to visit the Royal Palace. Another alternative is to take the train to Meknes and hire the grand taxi to the ruins from there.

Friday is the Islamic day of rest. So this will affect businesses in medinas such as Fes, but in the "ville nouvelle" they observe the occidental day of rest (Sunday).

Thanks Chano for the Friday and Volubilis input.

Anybody else want to share their opinion on the highlights of Fez?

Thanks.
