Anyone any info on the Massa lagoon? How far is it from Agadir and how much would a taxi cost. Is it worth it?
Massa is a nature reserve some 40Km/24 miles south of Agadir, an hours drive, and is located on the Atlantic coast. It has what some describe as one of the worlds most beautiful beaches.
The Massa river forms a lagoon where many rare birds are found. In the vegetation are snipe, bald ibis, little crake and numerous others; great if you are a bird fancier.
Elsewhere in the Massa are Gazelle, Algerian Hedgehog, Brown Hare, Barbary Ground-squirrell, Jackal, Red Fox, Weasel, Egyptian Mongoose and African Wild Cat. Amphibians and reptiles are plentiful.
It is a national park on a grand scale but in hot weather, don't expect to see much.
Getting there by taxi may be tricky due to the terrain so a 4x4 is the usual means of transportation.
Group tours are priced at about 500Dh which includes lunch at the nearby Sidi R'bat and visit to the dam amongst other sights. There are numerous tour operators around town so you can compare prices. Do not be pressured into handing over any money as the operators can be very persuasive and be sure to check they have the necessary insurance (which some do not have).
A magnificent response John with some excellent advice. A big thank-you..
can it be reached by car as well as we will be renting a normal small car.

The terrain is mostly sandy so you need a 4X4 ideally. There is the Sidi R'Bat road which also leads to the Massa parc.
