desert tours companies

Hello,

I'm thinking of booking a tour with Desert majesty located in Ouarzazate. Has anyone used them? Another one is Sahara Services, which operates out of M'Hamid.

Also, would you recommend Erg Cheggaga for an overnight stay in the desert? How cold can it get in this area during December?

I would greatly appreciate any advise from all you experienced travellers out there.

andy .

thank you for your help .

Edith Kohlbach writes enthusiastically about Sahara Services, "A very good, trusted operators, who get along wonderfully, especially with children is based in Mhamid agency Sahara Services", see www.edith-kohlbach.de/wustentouren.html

Felicity of Desert Majesty gets lots of positive feedback. Either of these operators will take you on an overnight in the sand dunes.

Sorry, I use Chrome as a browser which automatically translates on the fly and I forget other browsers don't do this. ;)

There was nothing in the deleted posts; Edith Kohlbach is quite famous over the last 15 years or so as an explorer/writer in Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia and is an occasional contributor on Lonely Planet's ThornTree forums.

Having recently coming back from a 10 day trip to Morocco during september , i used tripadvisor to try and research some companies to do an excursion with from Marrakech - trying to find a decent one from all the options listed on the internet and guide books! Thought id recommend the company Desert majesty in Ouarzazate as an option for any future travellers looking to do something similar (its in the latest lonely planet too so i guess im just re-enforcing the guidebooks suggestion), and we had a great time with them.

just to reiterate im not a tout! just an aussie living in london with my gf who didnt have a clue which company to go with for an excursion!

We had 7 days with a 4x4, driver, and guide returning to Marrakech. We went to the dades valley, todra gorge, Merzouga dunes, and, draa valley. Desert majesty uses a cool bivouac nearby to the dunes where you stay in nomad style tents. great fun, and the boys there play drums and get you in the vibe. Its really beautiful and not busy there in the slightest (i was expecting far more in the way of jeeps etc to swoop past). You could however stay closer to the dunes, but part of the fun is taking the camel trek up to the soaring dunes anyway which are truly spectacular. Id recommend a full day in the dunes via camel if you have the time (you still come back at sunset in april anyway and return under the stars) as the late afternoon trip is really just a taster!!

Desert majesty also organised at their own suggestion an overnight stay with a berber family in the dades mountains. quite an amazing time spending it with the family and their simple lifestyle which is a 2.5 hr hike from the nearest town!

The guides are all about mid to late 20's and our particular guide spoke perfect english (although they never admit how well they speak!) and were great fun! So all in all, you could do a lot worse than using Desert majesty as an excursion option. we obviously had the luxury of 7 days, but keep in mind a trip to Merzouga from Marrakech is a lot of driving if doing it in only a couple of days (although the dunes are pretty damn awesome) - but have no idea how they compare to chegaga near Zagora.

prices were pretty standard from various quotes of other companies, and the accomodation was really good for the 3 nights we werent staying in the dunes or mountains. im sure its possible to negotiate for cheaper accomodation if you wish to reduce the price.

anyway, hope this helps someone! only issue i had was to reserve the trip in advance we had to make a western union money transfer. was fairly uncomfortable about this, but it did go smoothly. would be better if they had paypal or maybe even take credit cards direct.

stephe.
